Pepto Bismol For Intestinal Upsets

Murphy had an upset stomach yesterday....vomiting and diarrhea.  The Vet told me to give him Pepto Bismol and Pepcid AC and wait 24 hours to see if it helped (if not, she wanted me to call her back).  She also told me to only give him a little chicken and rice, and keep him well hydrated (a "no brainer").  The Pepto worked, and it stopped him symptoms almost immediately.  I thought I'd document it here along with the dosage.  I know that I'll forget, and it will serve as a reference to me in the future, and it may help others as well.   A 50 pound dog should have l tablet of Pepto Bismol 3x per day and one 10 Mg dose of Pepcid AC once per day.  I hope others find this helpful.

After doing some calculations I found that the chart would recommend a much higher dose (triple) of the Pepto Bismol. I would definitely follow your vets advise.

That's pretty interesting. The dose I gave him based on my Vet's direction worked quickly, and there's been no more episodes today, although he is low key. I agree, I'll stick to what my Vet recommended.

WOW! Jane! That's great to know... God knows we have plenty of Pepto in the house for human bellies! Hope he feels better soon! did the vet seem to think it was a virus? I know my class is all getting this stomach bug already - YUCK! That is one thing I TRULY HATE!!!!!

Thanks for posting this. Next time if Charlie gets a tummy ache again, I will try this first. Trip to the vet cost me $114.00.
