So tonight, DH & I along with Lucy and Sophie are at the County Fair!  As we are making our way around to leave the Fairgrounds when we notice a young couple with two little puppies that look like they must be doodles!  DH goes over (I'm being cornered by someone petting Sophie) to ask if they are doodles.  I miss the beginning of the conversation, but join in a little later.  The first thing the lady asks me is if Lucy and Sophie are good with kids ....... :o( (flag #1)!  Then she says we were hoping so because we have a baby!  Did I mention they have 2 puppies.  I gave the usual speech about yes ours are good with kids, but they didn't come that way, it required a lot of training.  Then I asked her how old the puppies were and she said 6 months, to which I replied, Oh they are mini's and she said yes.  Then she says we saw you guys walking around here with yours but we didn't have ours yet ..... to which I'm thinking, huh!  I said oh, you just got them and they said (wait for it), yes, we just got them.  There was a lady with them in a box at the gate ..... she had the papers and everything!  We had been trying to get one off of Petfinder but everytime we called they were already gone, so we got really lucky!  I was SPEECHLESS!    If I would of had a pen and paper I would have just gone ahead and given them the DRC number, because I will bet they end up giving them up!   Ok, I'm done venting now!

This has me confused too. Often times, in our local bulletin board, people are selling doodles "with papers." I thought only purebreds could have papers. But then I saw an ad for beagle/pug puppies. The pug and beagle parents had AKC papers. Perhaps it's that? I don't know how they can apply them to the puppies, though.

At any rate...*sigh* I know every time I pass people at Wal-Mart with a bunch of puppies, I want to snatch one up and take it home. But this seems totally irresponible, especially considering the puppies' age and the fact this couple has a baby (who knows how old).

They're going to have their hands full for sure. And the fate of these pups are definitely uncertain.

Commercial breeders have registration numbers with the USDA. The "papers" give the breeder's name, address, registration number, names and breeds of the parents, and sometimes a litter number. It isn't worth the paper it's printed on, and means absolutely nothing. They aren't AKC registration papers, although those often mean nothing either. Anyone who breeds two dogs of the same breed together can register the litter with the AKC for a fee. Pet store dogs from puppy mills have "papers".
There are all kinds of other bogus organizations that will sell "papers". Again, all worthless, but most people have no idea what they're looking at. The term "papers" used to mean an impressive pedigree.

There are 'papers' as far as some doodle organizations or the Continental Kennel Club or sometimes other invented-just-for-the-sake-of-saying-"papers"organizations.

Violet had CKC papers and the breeder had a full history and championships on her parents and genetic lines. It's BS. It makes people feel like there is a value there, thats all. I got Violet before joining here and admit her breeder is basically a back yard breeder. Nice lady, but I wouldn't recommend her. I appreciate the difference between her breeder and Veruca's breeder a lot more since joining.

I agree, I never thought Doodles came with papers. Five months ago we rescued Billy, a Goldendoodle from a family that could no longer care for him. We planned to foster but fell in love and now Lexi has a younger brother and Billy a forever home.
When we asked for Vet records, medical history, what food he was on etc. they gave me papers provided by the shop where he was purchased as a puppy. The papers had a complete history of the registered Golden Retreivers and Registered Poodles provided by the breeder to the pet shop. He is registered and was microchipped as well. Apparently there is an organization that is trying to get recognition for our Doodles and is providing papers and a history of the parents. I assume that he was not a Puppy Mill Doodle and that the pet shop must have gotten him from a good breeder. Of course we wll never know, but he has turned out to be so special and so good.

No good breeder sells their puppies to pet shops. Puppy mill dogs come with papers. My last foster who was purchased from Pete's Petland had the same papers. I looked the "breeder' up on-line. I assure you it was not a good breeder...it was a commercial BYB who was cited for among other things, having doodle puppies standing knee deep in feces. Jack was purchased from a pet shop and he came with "papers", too. As I explained above, they are just records of the commercial breeding establishment.
Any litter can be registered, even those from puppy mills. Australian labradoodles have an association that provides papers and a history of the parents, otherwise known as a pedigree. That is very different from the papers Billy and Jack came with from the pet store.
Actually, it is very easy for you to know; all you have to do is google the breeder's name from the papers.

I'm speechless, too. The greed and stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me.
Just as well you didn't give them any info...unless you're looking for two fosters next time around.

Boy, this is full of red flags, 2 puppies, 6 months old, papers (whatever those are) hopefully some vet records were in the "papers", a baby, a box at the gate!!!! Yicks, I have a sad feeling you are right about the future of these pups.
