It is ironic that Frannie just posted the discussion about her Kindle, because I am currently trying to decide between the Nook and Kindle. For all of you owners, what do you like, and dislike about your choice? And a totally different question... can you browse other things like facebook, gmail, etc. on the wifi models? Thanks in advance!

UPDATE

We chose to buy the kindle 3, with 3g. It is AMAZING! I can't believe how much like a book the screen is. Also, the internet is way amazing. I can go to Google images, Facebook, doodlekisses, any of the sites that I assumed I wouldn't be able to. Of course, it's in black and white but it's still cool. I don't really plan to do any browsing beyond e-mail and looking up numbers or addresses but it's nice to know that it works so well! It is WAY easy to put the pdfs I already own onto it. I just plug it into my computer and copy it into the folder. Tada! I am so excited to continue reading. Thank you everyone for your suggestions!

I have no answer for you but I am interested in the answer.
I have the first generation Kindle and the only Wi Fi is for going to Amazon to shop for more books, magazines, etc. and purchase them. At least, as far as I know. If you have the iPad you can do it all and then some!!!! Really the way to go. You can always Google "Can You Get E-Mail on a Kindle" and I bet you will get your answer. Good Luck.
I have googled it... but I am still confused. Some people talk about being able to go to other sites... but others say you can only download books? maybe i am missing something. Also, I would get an IPAD in a heartbeat. However, it is DEFINITELY not in my budget.
I don't know if they advertise being able to use the internet. It was a big discussion when I got my kindle and both of my sons were home. They promptly found a way to get on the internet and go wherever. Its not like using a computer but then there no charge for going online and you can do it anywhere.
I have the Kindle 2 and my son quickly figured out you can go anywhere on the internet for free. The keyboard isn't ideal but you can get there. I haven't had my hands on the Nook, but saw the huge add in Barnes and Noble a few weeks ago. It looks good, and I think it has color according to the poster. The Kindle doesn't. And I can read the Kindle in bright sunlight. Don't know if this helps. Yes, IPad is probably the best, but it costs quite a bit more.
I LOVE my 3G Kindle......I can shop the Amazon Kindle store....but go on the internet????? Can you tell me how?
I have a Kindle 2 (second generation). To go to the internet, press the Menu button go to Experimental then move cursor to the launch browser on the right side of Basic Web. You can browse pre-listed web sites or press the Menu button again and go the Enter URL and you can enter a web site address. These sites are very basic!

I love my Kindle! This is my second one - I passed on my 1st generation to my husband. I secretly yearn for an IPad but I know the Kindle is better for reading.
Ha! Thanks for the tips!!! Had I known this I would have gotten the 3G.....much handier to have when your not home or in a wifi spot! I'll go for the IPad when this ole Dell dies. Love my gadgets!
I know there is some primitive internet connectivity but nowhere near what an Ipad can do, I think. Consumer Reports, website consumerreports.org. just id a comparison of the available devices.
I just started reading about Kindle and Nook here in the last few weeks. I can't believe that I had not heard of them. Have to check it out as it sounds like something I would like.
I have the Nook and I can get to the internet (when I'm somewhere that has wifi). It is however not the way I would personally want to sit and surf. It is just on the little screen at the bottom (which by the way is the only color part). The keyboard is very small which makes it very hard to type. There have been a couple other discussions here and from what I can tell, the only major difference between the two is with Nook you can lend books to others. You do it through e-mail and can lend for 2 weeks I believe. Some books, not all books. It has to be "lendable". Haven't tried it yet as I just got mine. The Ohio library system also has several thousand books available that you can download for a couple weeks as well. Their system won't work with Kindle. I'm guessing other state libraries probably have the same. I agree that the IPAD would be the ultimate toy of choice, however since DH and I both just bought new desktops in the last couple months, and I already have a laptop, I just couldn't justify the extra expense. Keep in mind though on top of what you spend on the reader you will want a case and a light as a minimum
I would save up and go with the IPad... you get a LOT more bang for your buck.
