Maple is coughing. She is happy, eating and pooping but coughing. It's a "hack" and about a third of the time she spits up a little white mucus-like foam. She is keeping her food down and drinking water. Anyone experience this?
I'm not sure where you live, but I know kennel cough has been going around our neighborhood. I barely let Maizey approach another dog because I've had 2 friends whose pups have gotten it recently. They described the symptoms as a hacking cough and mucus that came up as well. I'd take Maple to the vet ....but that's just me. Of course, I hope it's nothing... keep us posted :)
Yeah, I thought bordatella as soon as I read this. Even if she's had the vaccine, it isn't always effective against every strain. I'd bring her in to the vet.
she's been around other dogs in obedience class for the past month. Lucky had a sneezing fit this morning but so far is ok. it's as if she has something stuck in her throat. yes, petmd says that there are many different types. I guess it's like the human flu shot - maybe you'll catch one it doesn't fight.
is this an emergncy vet visit call ?
- we're in DC and it's 8:00 pm
No I don't think you need to go to the Emergency Vet. From what I know, Bortadella is not transferrable to humans so unless you have other dogs you are concerned about spreading it to, I think you can wait until the morning to call your vet. I'd be prepared for a sleepless night of coughing though...from what I hear, the hacking only gets worse. Give Maple some extra loving :)
thanks. I just checked my question on "justanswer.com" with the dog Vet. He confrmed and also said if she is coughing tomorrow to take her in.
she was just in less than 3 weeks ago for her well dog check up and vaccinations! poor baby. I put her thunderjacket on her and turned off the tv.
Thanks everyone. It's a rumble when a 65 lb dog coughs! scary.
I'll check-in back here tomorrow....
Sounds like Kennel cough...it's like the common cold for people! I don't think the emergency vet is necessary but definitely take her to the vet tomorrow! I just had foster who got kennel cough..same sounds...hacking and mucus...yuck. Got cough medicine and she was back to normal in a couple of days!!
Yep..they are all correct. I think it is kennel cough too. Frankie Girl has had it twice now and gets it every time I take her to doggie daycare. She has been vaccinated for it, as supposedly are the other dogs there, but somehow she just keeps catching it. I am not sending her there anymore as twice is enough. The first time she was quite young and we took her to the vet who gave her medication. The second time, we already had some medication left over and we self-treated her and it went away. Good luck....
My dog just had this. The vet said it was a virus going around town. Kirby had just been neutered the week before so I think he got it at the vet's office. He had 2 different meds to take for 10 days. My little dog started having the exact same symptoms about 4 days later, so now she's taking her medicine, too. Kirby is all well :)
Sounds like Kennel Cough to me. One of my dogs got it while the others did not. They all were vaccinated. The vet said to me that Kennel Cough immunization is actually kind of like the flu shot for us - and it doesn't always keep away the particular virus going around. I don't know how simplified this was but it made sense to me.
I second (and third/forth and so on) these comments/experiences. Same thing happened to my previous dog (why is it that so many times when I key in "dog" I wind up with "god"??? although I do kind of worship these 4 legged creatures....). I always kept Casey up to date with her vaccinations including bordatella but shortly after coming home from a kennel stay when she was about 6 she came down with quite a case of it. We had to remove all the throw rugs and keep her in the tiled bathroom she kept coughing up that foamy stuff and sounded absolutely dreadful. It took several days to pass.
