My doodle sheds, but not a ton. It started with his coat change. I don't know if it will end once he is done with the coat change, but we get a nice layer of cream fur on our carpet if we don't vacuum for a couple of days. He didn't shed at all as a puppy... but even if he does shed forever we still love him! Neither of use have allergies, and we didn't pick them specifically to be non-shedding, so either way will work just fine for us!
Remy sheds MAJORLY...
Hi all! I know there hasn't been much activity as of late, but I'm new to Doodles and Bernie is new to me. He's a 4 month old multigen but the owner warned us he would shed a little bit. He was what we call a "discount puppy" (for what that's worth with this breed!) because of his wavy fleece coat (which is sooooo soft) that seems to have a touch of what I would assume is the 'hair' variety along his back and rump. Some days I'll wear black and I swear he's balding, and other days it's barely a hair or two. Am I mostly dealing with puppy coat issues at this point? Is there any way to gauge how much he'll actually shed at this point? I brush him every other day because it's relaxing and he looks so good afterward, not necessarily because I have to.

He is darling!!! Some doodles have coats that look the same as adults, some have dramatic changes. Most seem to get a bit curlier. Some shed before the 'coat change' and some don't and for some the reverse is true. And some never shed. It really is a toss-up. I think that the coats are least predictable for generations 2 to maybe 4 and then 'stablize' in future pairings. Your breeder's prediction is probably your best source. The experienced breeders really know coats and can predict pretty accurately.
Thank you Nancy, very helpful! We'll love him just as much no matter what, and the important part is that the hair that does shed doesn't bother my allergies. It's so funny how unpredictable Doodles are physically but how seemingly predictable they are when it comes to their goofy, sweet, intelligent temperaments =)
We have two Mutli-Gen Autralian Doodles. Our first doodle, Sydney (a 7 and 9 generation ALD), sheds like a banjee She started to shed at about 5 months (and has not stopped) and we were pretty upset. BUT WE STILL LOVE HER!!!! Our new best friend is our "Dyson" vacuum cleaner, ha, ha, :) We have recently switched to Canine Caviar food from Natural Balance Unltra Premium and we are seeing some nice results.......less shedding. We also have been giving Sydney "Majesties Buddy Bites Omega Wafers" for about a year now and these nutritional wafers have seemed to help improve her coat.
Our second doodle, Olivia (a 2nd and 3rd gen ALD) does not shed at all so we have favored her a bit for that wonderful doodle quality!

They are both very lovable and have their own personalities........amazingly smart!!!!!
After we sent our previous reply, this came to mind........DOODLES, they're like a box of chocolates.....you never know what you're going to get!
Hi, My name is Pam, and I have a shedding F1 mini goldendoodle. His name is Buddy, and he is almost 6 months old. The hair on his back looks just like golden retriever hair and is shedding like one too. I don't know if it will slow down or stop shedding once all the puppy hair is out. Anyone have experience with this type of shedding with their doodle?
Pam I kind of know what you mean. Bernie is a 5 month old multi-gen Labradoodle but does shed a bit, the breeder warned us, and he was a little 'discount puppy' because of it. I have allergies so I was really worried, but he hasn't bothered me at all. Back to your issue though, Bernie also has hair that is more coarse on his rump and it feathers in through the hair along his back. Everywhere else on him is super soft though, chest, head, legs, tummy. And he shed a lot when he was real young! Lots of baby hair I think. As he gets older I've determined he sheds in waves. We'll go a whole week without seeing hair on our pant legs, then one day we'll definitely notice it. We brush him, and then it's fine. But I will say it's slowed down quite a bit, even in the last couple months. So I think we have a Doodle that needs a weekly brushing. I'll be curious if anyone with an older Doodle responds to this.
We have a 2 1/2 year old rescue doodle. The hair on his back is quite coarse. It sheds lots and never mats or even has a comb 'catch' on hair. His tail is also coarse but doesn't seem to shed. The rest of him is soft. I can't tell if the soft fur sheds or not but not a lot comes out in the comb.
I must confess that I WISH Cocoa did shed!!! Well, she actually DOES shed- big puffs of hair... but instead of falling out they pile up in clumps and mats in her fur. There may be no hair on my floor or sweater, but believe me it takes hours each week to get that hair out of her coat. I need to brush her thoroughly every single day or the mats become unbearable. The amount of time I spent vacuuming up after the collie we had previously was nothing compared to what I spend brushing and combing Cocoa. And, sadly, although she waits patiently for me to comb her out she can't stand it and hides if she sees me with her comb or brush.
Leslie, it will probably get better. Ned was a non-shedder and major matter. He is 2/12 now and we can usually go for a week between brushings without mats that we can't get out. He began to mat less at 2. He does mat right after grooming (we need to get the extra hairs out from the cut) and if he gets into something and his tail still will mat some.
