It seems that Sunny is drinking more water than normal. I have just started measuring it, so I don't know exactly how much yet. But I am definitely filling her dish more often. She is 3 years old and 55lbs. Anyone know how much water is normal?
Jackdoodle is almost 6, and he drinks a good amount of water. I use a large stainless steel water bowl and refill at least three times a day.
Unless you see a dramatic increase in water consumption over a relatively short period, accompanied by noticeably more frequent urination, I don't think it's anything to be concerned about.
Our Doodles have a big bowl thats filled at least twice a day. Not too much water considering Cricket let's a good amount run out of her mouth onto the floor - goofball.
What would "dramatic increase in water consumption over a relatively short period, accompanied by noticeably more frequent urination" be associated with? Seems an increase in water consumption would naturally lead to more frequent urination.
But not that you'd necessarily notice. And not for an extended time. I think all of our dogs have days where they drink more water than others; maybe they've had more exercise, maybe the air is dryer, maybe they had a bone that made them thirsty, etc. On those days, I don't notice Jack having to go outside more often than other days.
But my elderly cat is in early kidney failure, and the first signs of that were that all of a sudden, her water bowl was empty all the time, as fast as I could fill it, day after day. I can't give an exact amount of water, or number of times that a dog needs to urinate, because all of them are different. But you notice when there's a big difference.
Camus drinks a lot of water, at times it seems he cannot get enough (even before he was on prednisone). I was a bit concerned at first, but he seems fine. I just make a point to keep his water bowl(s) full of fresh water.
Just as Karen said, of you really really notice something different and it is bugging you, I would give the vet a call. It can be a sign of infection with the kidneys and you should not let it go unnoticed.
That being said, my doodle drinks a ton of water, but she always has, so I don't worry abotu it. My chihuahua has early kidney isses and the water and urination issue is always on my mind....
If it is nagging you, call your vet and they will probably just do a simple $40-50 (depending on vet) blood test and makes sure everything's a-ok!
Thanks everyone, I'll keep an eye on her. But for now I don't notice anything too extreme. I too had a cat that had serious issues and the first symptom was the increased drinking. She did just get a new bone a couple days ago, so maybe that is all it it.
It is so nice to have a group to bounce questions off of. Thanks!
