Hi all, we're thinking of getting some boots for Bernie and I'd like some feedback from anyone who's tried them or uses them. Recommendations, issues, tips, etc. We hike A LOT and next summer he'll be old enough to go with us. I've read they're good for longer hikes, on rougher terrain, to protect their paws and pads? Is this really a good idea or just a gimmick? We figured if we start soon not only will he be used to them by next summer but he'll also have a little protection from the ice and snow on our longer walks this winter. Thanks in advance!
Jackdoodle wears Muttluks dog boots to protect his pads when he runs at the forest preserves. They are really not a gimmick. Here's a review I posted about them: Muttluks
Here is a picture of Quincy in his boots, they are not muttluks but are very similar, these were actually $10 at Walmart. They lasted through one winter and are still good for this winter, we didn't use them in the summer. They stayed on pretty well except if the velcro got full of snow, but they have to be put on quite snug to stay on and in the proper place. Quincy didn't mind them at all and they never interfered with his playing. You will probably need the better quality boots if you are using them on a surface other than snow. Oops forgot to attach the pic.
Gracie Doodle wears the Muttluks and doesn't mind them at all. We don't have snow and the times she has had to wear her boots is because she has an injury that I am protecting. She was able to climb dirt cliffs and run down them, chase her ball on cement and jump and climb without any problem at all.
Cooper hates boots - I tried them last year when she was little.
I work in a pet store and we sell many (the best brand being Muttlucks) but we also get a lot of returns. Most dogs HATE them. Worth a try though - just make sure you can return them
Another option is to use a product called "invisible boots" it is a cream which gives a protective covering for the paw pad - you still get wet fur though
Hahaha, can't wait! We put a pack on Bernie for the first time today and he acted like an alien life form had taken up residence on his back! He hated it! But once we got to playing and handing out treats he forgot it was there...for the most part.
Boy, those are some tall boots!!! They look very cute and Echo seems to be handling it well. What make are your boots? Gracie Doodle wears the Muttluks.
