Our 3-year-old goldendoodle, Woody, escaped from our backyard after I forgot to close the gate after doing some yard work.  I looked around for him, but he was nowhere to be found.  What a sick feeling that was.  My wife and I take him for long walks all around our neighborhood so I drove around looking for him without any luck.  I came home and then my wife went out to drive around to see if she could locate him.  While she was gone I decided to go upstairs to our computer and when heading for the stairs there was Woody standing on the front porch looking in the storm door waiting to come in.  What a happy moment that was.  He was gone for close to an hour.  When my wife came back she was shocked to see Woody looking out the front door at her.  We have no idea where he went.  Most of our property and those of our neighbors on our side of the street are woods.  His hair was as clean as when we let him out so we don't think he went into the woods.  At least now we know he will come back although we don't want to give him a second chance.  When we walk him, we often just let the leash drag on the ground and he will stay with us or just go a short distance away, but will come to us if we call.  He is a very friendly dog and if someone driving by saw him he would probably go into their car without any hesitation.  Our UPS driver always gives him a treat when he comes and Woody gets excited whenever he sees a UPS truck.

so glad Woody came back by himself and all turned out ok!!!!! What a relief!
Lucky, lucky. I am so glad that Woody came back. I would be an absolute mess if my Gracie Doodle ever disappeared. I really think she would never go far. Only down about 5 houses across the street to her best friends but I don't want to ever test it. Give Woody a big hug for us!!!
Wow! So glad Woody came home! I can't image the feeling of not knowing where my dog is!!! You must have been frantic! I always have Banjo on leash for walks and am sometimes tempted to drop the leash....but if he were to run off trail into the woods...I'd panic. And, he too, would go with any friendly stranger I believe......especially one bearing treats!!!!
I am so HAPPY Woody just came back. I am sure you were worried. What a relief! Smart doodle just came home :)
I'm glad Woody came back, what a scary situation!

I suspect we have all had moments like this. I know I have and it's an awful feeling. Glad Woody is safe.

I'm glad Woody was a good boy and came back home safe.

I'm so glad Woody is home and safe.

So glad Woody came back safe and sound. We recently had a similar experience with Quincy, he is not one to bolt out the door and we do not leave his tags on when he is inside. He once got his tags tangled in the rack of the dishwasher and pulled the entire rack of dishes across the kitchen floor and it scared him pretty badly. The other day one of my son's friends was visiting and we had given him an extra TV that we were not using, when he went outside he left the door open and forgot to come back and close it. I realized I hadn't seen Quincy in about 10mins but thought he was in my son's room. When I called him he didn't come, he will always come when called inside the house. Then I noticed the back door was open and I experience a brief moment of panic, my husband had gone down the street to a friends house and I was afraid Quincy had tried to follow him. Lucky for me he was just outside on the grassy area (unfenced)  where we play ball having a great time with a soccer ball we had left outside. He is not one to wander off and never goes out of sight even when we are hiking and he is off leash. I was so relieved he hadn't gone anywhere because I would be a complete basket case. Lesson learned, I am now extra vigilant about keeping an eye on him when people other than us are coming or going. I know exacly how you felt when you couldn't find Woody and it is not a good feeling.

We've had a gate left open issue like that more than once (my mom visiting and not latching it all the way and the garbage pickup guys at my neighbor's house (connected backyards).  Both times, we didn't even know the dogs were out of the fenced area until we heard them barking at my front door (one time) and the gate itself (the other time).  It was very scary.  Even though they do not wander, if someone were to walk their dog across the street, I am sure Porter would cross to say hi and try to play.

I am so glad that Woody knows his way home.

We're So Glad That Woody is home..Safe And Sound...
