I posted this story on my website and then just added a link to this group but I guess we're not allowed to post links to breeders websites so I've reposted the story here.
I wanted to share this story about The DANGERS of Potpourri because I believe it is something we all need to know. I know I personally had no clue this could happen if my dogs got into Potpourri! This story happen to my friend just recently..please read and pass on the information. Help Save another dog from the same fate. This is also a good example of why pet insurance can be a life saver!
I have a dear friend who’s has a beautiful Female Golden Retriever named “Ting” and about two months ago..Ting got into and ingested some dried botanical type of Potpourri (apple cinnamon to be exact) which unknowingly contained a neurotoxin. The Potpourri had been in the house for some time and the dogs had never bothered it but for whatever reason this time “Ting” did and she became extremely sick..it started out with heavy Drooling and then rapidly got much worse.
My friend brought Ting to her vet and they sent her too a neurologist who believes Ting had a stroke.. Tings whole left side had become affected & she could no longer swallow or hold her head up. She had to have an MRI & Scope done under general anesthesia, and she also had a feeding tube placed into her tummy. Her intestines ulcerated from the caustic substances in the potpourri, her esophagus was inflamed from the acid reflux & she had a pocket of fluid around her brain stem so she had to be started on cortisone, antibiotics & antacids. Ting’s Mommy slowly but surely nursed Ting back to health.
The Vet bills alone were over $6,000! Thank God she had insurance on her dogs because the insurance paid more than half!
This could happen to any of us. She was a loving pet owner who was willing to fight for her dog and now her dog is doing well and is almost back to normal, she has gained all her weight back & is playing with the other pups.
This is a recent picture of Ting! She is the adult Golden above.

Your friend is clearly a very loving and responsible dog owner.....and I'm so happy that Ting is doing so well now. I do keep a container of potpourri in each of the bathrooms, and I'm going right now to get rid of them. My guys have never seemed to notice them and they don't "counter surf", but this is just too frightening. They're gone...and thanks for this warning.
It would be very helpful if we could get the name of the ingredient in the potpourri which is a neurotoxin, so we could avoid products with that ingredient in the future.
