I've posted about a few dog-related books (The Art of Racing in the Rain, Edgar Sawtell (sp?), A Dog's Purpose) elsewhere on this site but now looking for recommendations for a good, absorbing but not overly deep read for a trip to Thailand in a few weeks. I'm currently reading "The Glass Castle" which I'm enjoying tremendously. Also liked "The Help", "Eat, Pray, Love", "The Namesake" so I suppose my genre is more along the lines of historical fiction/biographical embellishment if such a category exists! Based on truth with an element of fiction. I welcome all suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Well, I am currently reading Keith Richards book LIFE. There are pictures of him throughout his childhood and career with the Rolling Stones, and he writes about his upbringing and family life. Let me add that I was never really a Rolling Stones die hard fan, but I truly enjoyed reading this book. It is the kind of book you can read for a while, put down, and pick back up and get absorbed all over again. It is 547 pages long, so plenty of material for a long flight! Two other great books that come to mind along the same genre are Patti Boyd's book, WONDERFUL TODAY, and Eric Clapton's, CLAPTON.
I loved The Glass Castle! I also read Half Broke Horses by the same author-also very good. Our taste in books seems to be similar so I will list a few books that I enjoyed this year. South of Broad, Prayers for Sale, Shanghai Girls, The Book of Joe, This is Where I Leave You, The Other Boleyn Girl (I enjoyed this historical fiction book so much that I read the others that Phillipa Gregory wrote about the Queens of England) Have a great trip!

All sound like interesting selections, thanks, Cheryl. The author of This is Where I Leave You seems to have a few good titles to choose from. I'm going to try to hit Barnes & Noble this wknd to thumb threw a few of these to see which grab me the most. I don't know which to chose - the ones that will keep me awake or those that will put me to sleep!!! 18 hours is a long flight......

I'm almost finished with Dog House by Carol Prisant.  It's really wonderful.

I would recommend the Diana Gabaldon series.  The first book is Outlander, and if you like historical fiction you will L-O-V-E this book!  The first book is 600 pages and the others in the series are from 600 to 1000 plus pages.  I recommend reading the first book first.  It hooked me on the series.  I realized in September that I watched NO television all summer.  All I did was read this series!

Well this certainly fits the historical fiction bill! I checked out the reviews on both amazon and barnes and noble and have never seen SO many! Most are raves so sounds intriguing, v. interesting subject matter. I love books that become so real I start dreaming about the characters and this sounds like one I'd do just that....when I'm not dreaming of missing my doodle back home :-(

Have you read Pillars of the Earth? Wonderful

Pillars is a great book!
I liked "We Are All Fine Here" by Mary Guterson (She is from Bainbridge Island, Wa).  She also wrote "Gone to the Dogs". Both were funny, easy reading, that kept me interested.  And "Oxygen" by
Carol Cassella...kind of a fiction medical mystery about an Anesthesiologist. Can't say any more without spoiling it. Also loved "A Dog's Purpose", if you haven't read that one.  Any of them would be great reads on an airplane.  Have a great trip.
I've actually had Oxygen on my amazon wishlist since reading a review of it some time ago! I'll try to run over to Barnes & Noble before we leave to p/u a copy. Thanks much for the recommendation.
I have a great book for you.  I am currently reading Merle's Door by Ted Kerasote.  You can put it down and pick it up to resume at any time.  It is a dog lovers' book for sure.  The story is about a dog that was picked up on a rafting trip down the Colorado River and became a dear dog for one of the rafters.  Check it out.  It really reminds me of my very best dog, Hondo.  The dog communicates in many interesting ways.
Not sure if you have already left for your trip, but I just finished "The Forgotton Garden" by Kate Morton. It was 500 + pages long, so it would keep you busy. I really enjoyed it and had a hard time putting it down. A couple of my other favorites are "The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott" and "Those Who Save Us" (Set during WWII, but shows what a German woman who had a Jewish baby did in order to save herself and the baby) I also loved the Phillipa Gregory books that Cheryl mentioned. My favorite genre is also historical fiction!
