Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I know there have been lots of discussions about how much work doodles are and how they take time and LOTS of training.  For many doodles, including ones I've bred that is true.  However, does anyone have a doodle that is pretty well behaved by nature?   ....House trained really fast, doesn't jump up much and is generally very eager to please?  Overall I think our doodles that live with us are this way.  Maybe I'm very tolerant, but it seems that others have to have a similar experience.  About four months ago I placed a pup in a guardian home with a family that had never owned a dog and has three kids (5, 7 & 10)  We talked at length and I prepared them for all the work a pup would be. Every time I check in with them (usually once a week)  they tell me how amazing she is and how easy she is. She house trained in a week, doesn't jump, rarely nips and stays out of the living room without putting gates up.  When I go to visit I see these things for myself, so I know their not just saying it to appease me.

My sister is another guardian home.  She had never owned a dog and did great!  This pup is bigger and did jump up some but overall she has a very easy going temperament and my sister always says that she's easier to raise then the cat. :o)

This last year we've raised two pups together that are from two different breeders and they have never been "bad."  Sure they had accidents sometimes and will get into food if it's left low but overall they are really very good!  Our golden retriever has eaten two pairs of glasses and tracks in mud like no tomorrow, so not all my dogs are good all the time. :o)  And yes, we do have our days!

Anyway, sorry to be so long.... I'm just wondering if anyone else has really good doodles?  I think of doodles as being very lovable, intuitive, smart and eager to please. (Even as pups.)   Am I nuts or do other DK-ers have dogs like this?

IMO Hunter has been an extremely easy doodle.  I read anything and everything I could on goldendoodle's being an inexperienced dog owner to begin with.  I assumed the worst for everything.  She potty trained in about 2 weeks and her accidents were always my fault, we definitly learned from eachother.  If I teach her a comand it takes about 8 tries and she has got it down.  I am a little lax in letting her jump on people, she will listen and stay down if you tell her to but she will try.  My daughters are 11 and 8 and they let her jump around on them all the time so its hard to keep corrected when they encourage.  She isn't a high strung doodle at all to begin with - her jumping is more like standing on you so she can get closer to your face!  She is super mellow, couch potato.  Will tolerate grooming, brushing, nail clipping, getting dressed up by the kids, anything.  She is a chewer but as long as she has her things to chew she is fine.  It has been WAY MORE of an easier experience than I ever anticipated.  I never even remotely had hope that it would be as easy as its been but she is just great.  Sweet as can be, loves everyone.  She will counter surf given the opportunity but that is my only complaint.  :-)

Guinness, our mini ALD, has always been a really good boy.  I sometimes wonder if some of it is because he's too little to get himself in much trouble.  Yes, he's the "goody, goody Doodle" in our family.  Training him was a "walk in the park".  He's a pretty "laid back" guy, and he just seems to "with the flow".  I should add that his "baby brother" has been working on him.  Guinness has developed a few "bad habits" by watching Murph, but all I have to do with him is give "the look" and he goes right back to being sweet.

Peri has had 2 accidents since the first 2-3 weeks I brought her home (great in my opinion).  She was never nippy or too jumpy or destructive, but she had lots of energy and needed attention for a while.

She is only 20 months (still a puppy according to everything I read) and she is EASY now.  And she was always ready to please, train, etc....even as a 5 month old. She was happy training for an hour vs. just sitting around.

I think I exaggerate how "hard" she was as a young pup to make sure colleagues and friends know it is hard work many times.

And she is great with all types of people, dogs, babies, you name it.  Easy, loves ALL

Well PARTS of my doodles are 'easy' =)  And aside from Rosco's horrible nipping and bazillion pee accidents forever...he was a great pup!  lol

Boca was WAY easier of a pup than I anticipated.  Yes she was a bit older, but still...no puppy issues with her.  She was pretty much potty trained when I got her too.  She trains very well/easily for as much as I've done with her.  The only naughtiness/annoying habits are: A) walking really close to me or Natalie or anyone while carrying her bone hanging out of her mouth and thus bonking me or Natalie with it or snagging a nylon and B) over-enthusiastic greetings ... which we're getting more a handle on the longer she's in training.  Oh yeah and her obsessive love of squirrels.  Otherwise she's a gem!

Well that's YOUR fault that you wear nylons!  I believe they were created as a torture device.  Clearly Boca knows this and is doing you a favor! :o)
Really, why wait til your old like me to realize socks are the only way to go?
Rooney is a very good little doodle boy.  But I have to give his breeder props because he came to us at 11.5 wks mostly potty, crate and leash trained.  he is smart yet quirky.  Now if we could just stop averaging an emergency a month - life would be perfect.
Yes, I have a good doodle.  He will be five years old in March and came from the breeder at nine weeks old.  I had an older doodle and a standard poodle at that time and he bonded immediately with the doodle.  The doodle, Hondo, trained him to do everything, and other than pulling the hair out of Hondo's ears, he was never a problem.  House training - didn't need to do that.  Tearing up things - Nope.  Obedience classes - he never went but learned sit, come, down, stay naturally and follows commands because he wants to please.  He never tears up anything and I took him up the hill on leash today to practice walking on leash and he heeled at my left leg although he has never been taught to do that.  He just blended into the family and I don't remember any problems at all.  Ah, wait a minute, he did eat ornaments off the Christmas tree, but we put a mouse trap on the front of the tree and he left the ornaments alone after the mouse trap snapped at him.
OMD!  I totally forgot one little thing.  Groucho Too is a chaser.  He loves to chase cows, so I have to keep him on leash when we are walking out in the countryside.  And cats!  We took our two big dogs into an outdoor restaurant with lots of plants and other animals walking around inside.  Groucho Too was sitting up very regally when I left to go to the bathroom.  When I came back out, my DH and the dogs were gone.  I was looking around, and a diner at the next table told me that my dog had chased a cat.  Apparently a cat was sitting on a ledge looking at him and when she departed, he departed after her dragging his leash behind him.  My husband went after him and his leash wrapped around a rose bush and it had to be extricated from the bush, cutting my husband hands.  Needless to say, the dogs went back to the car and my DH did not enjoy his dinner (first time ever in a Mexican restaurant).  So, is he still a good doodle???
Yes, he is a wonderful dog. He is not a robot. I thoroughly enjoy your dogs' names. They are also very cute.
Phoebe has turned into a super mellow fabulous doodle but she did not start out that way.  She took very long to housetrain as she was plagued by UTI's and bladder infections as a puppy (so not her fault!).  She was a terrible nipper/biter/growler especially between 6 -10 months. It was awful.  I had to have a private trainer come to the house to help teach me how to deal with her and teach Phoebe appropriate responses to her enthusiasm (nicely euphemized, no?).  When she turned one, a switch was flicked and it all disappeared.  Now as a 'new' two year old, I think she is wonderful...slightly lazy and a super couch potato and cuddler but ready to go on three mile walks when I take her out.  Once we get the jumping greeting under control, she will be perfect!  Actually, I know she already is.
