Just a thought!

I think that puli's are just AMAZING dogs and look at their coats!! they don't call them mats. They are cords! =)

What if we stopped calling the mess that happens with our doodles coats a mat and applying the much nicer "cord" word. In fact, could a doodle have cords???

Not like I would want to try it, but it was a funny passing thought I wanted to share =)

I do believe so far, I am the only DK member who does cord. I stopped brushing my Spud this year.  No MORE BRUSHING.  Spud is corded.  He will never be brushed again.  I too thought that we could stop fighting the mess and make a coat that naturally cords.   IT IS NATURAL

You said you do not want to try it... but really it is easier than  you think and I am totally happy with the results.   So is he.

There are more video links in my discussion about cording.  I'm going to mat my dog: Cording"  Here in the Grooming Group.

He does not look as smooth as corded Puli Dogs but his cords are young.  Puli's begin cording at the adult coat stage around 9 months.  The cords you see are about 3 or more years old.

Have fun, join my discussion, and JOIN ME if you want to cord.

I have spoken to a groomer who cords and she and I correspond now by email  She is mentored by a woman in the UK.  I've learned a lot.

Just linked to your discussion Joanne. I'm so excited to see more photos of Spud's coat as he progresses.

Yeah, I read about dreading.  For humans you need Bees Wax or twists and maybe some additives to the hair.  I even saw the knots they make.   It is not done the same way with the dogs.  I do have about 6 cords waxed and they are dirty and black.  Still.   I did start this way and watched videos.  With humans you need to add oils or wax, with dogs No wax, No oils.   The more baths you give in the beginning without detanglers or conditioners the FASTER the coat will cord.

I have enough wet and snow here so I gave  not so many baths to begin the process.

Oh wow.  I missed it the first time.  This is YOU.  Are you seven or are these dreads 7 years old?   Pretty cool I think.

Sorry... hee hee.  I typed that wrong.  I just got excited someone else thought this might be a good idea too.

I love the braids.  That might be cool to try on the dogs also.

And since the discussion about Spud (above) I noticed my lack of brushing gave Rosco's thigh hair a rasta look. The coat there seems to be happy cording itself.

Yeah.  Actually I am happy for Rosco!  It is Natural.   It may be the way SOME,. not all, doodles may be some day.

I read on a Puli page or a Komador site that brushing these dogs is Masochistic...  For the groomer and the dog!  LOL   I SO MUCH AGREE!

Starlit would and could never be corded.  Just depends on the coats I suppose.   Like you said Adina, Rosco only begins cords on the legs.  So far, Spud has areas that are so EASY and others that do not seem to want to work.

I seen Komadors up close at a dog show one time, I was utterly fascinated.
His  head and back are corded.  His chest is just beginning the Crisp Stage so the cords are very wide.  You split as you go.  His legs and feet form naturally and so far have needed no care.   I still keep his belly 1/2 inch.  The ears are not corded yet.  It says wait over a year...... and maybe never able to do.  It depends on the coat.

If it is a wooley coat it is really easy.

Just:

-Be patient.  When you think you can no longer stand the site of the messy dog, when you think someone may call the humane society because your dog looks so bad--then it is time for that area of the coat.

-Make sure it is crisp and splits easily.  FELTING is the term.  Then split.

-If it won't split real easy then STOP.  Finish the split with scissors  and leave that area alone.

-His neck and back are really easy and he loves it. His hips and sides hurt him if I split.  You can really hurt them if it is not ready.  To ease his comfort I have cut the sides and the hips to get him started although some say this causes the frizzes and one groomer told me ..but cutting is the only way.  So I have no idea if manual or scissors are best.  Just go with what you Dog Tells You.

-Was them in diluted Dawn soap was recommended and rinse FOREVER.  No conditioner.  *  I have not done this yet.

And the truth.  This takes LESS time than brushing per week.

-One more --Keep me informed.  We can share some ideas if you decide to do this.  So far I have about 20  hours of reading and videos and then made up my own stuff along the way.

GOOD LUCK!    :)

as you can tell, I'm really excited about this for doodles everywhere who have to ENDURE THAT HORRIBLE Les Poochie Brush every night.     Don't throw out the hair--throw out that brush  :)

OH SHE IS PERFECT!   I love her.
