Just a thought!
I think that puli's are just AMAZING dogs and look at their coats!! they don't call them mats. They are cords! =)

What if we stopped calling the mess that happens with our doodles coats a mat and applying the much nicer "cord" word. In fact, could a doodle have cords???
Not like I would want to try it, but it was a funny passing thought I wanted to share =)

Have you ever seen the Budwieser ( I think it was Bud ) that had a commercial of the man in dreads and his dog in a bar. Funny.
Let me go see if I can find this. You two could try this commerical.

Here is the link. I don't think I embeded the video right.
Jared: Allergies and Cording = DISASTER. No, you should not cord you dog.
Actually, your dog probably will not cord. I have one that will and one who won't. You need a Poodle type coat for cording
Cords have a tendency to even MOLD. It takes a very long time to dry. Days. Days. Days. Coats harbor dust, dirt, and everything you can spore you can think of.
I do NOT have dog allergies but when I would shave Spud I could not breathe because of the other allergies I have. The coats with long hair, let alone dreads, are a living breathing dust mop :)
Can't wait to see your results in a couple of years. Check out this video of the a photo shoot with corded Poodles:

There are some still shots in this post too. And your comments to me... that I was crazy. LOL :) But that's okay, I am.
Carol- DO IT. I don't think I am going to let it go years. Spud swims all the TIME. He is a dock diver all summer. He is HAPPY swimming. So to take this away because of vanity is wrong on my part. To keep his skin healthy would be a chore.
So I will do it from September until May just so he does not have to endure that horrible brushing and let it go at that. I know these take years. Maybe when he is old and does not want to swim but I won't make him stop the joys of having fun.
I love the look of cords but I had a really bad experience at a dog show once where I was set up next to some Puli people. Their dogs stunk to high heavens; a combination of sour milk and dirty dog. Seriously, I could barely breath. I worry with my active lifestyle that I will get moldy cords or little velcro strips that are full of debris.
Color is important too. I know a woman who corded her Cream poodle. The dog always look dingy and dirty. Conversely, I think the cords don't show up well on a really Black dog. It is almost as though it takes a true White dog like the ones in the video to show off the cords to their best.
Here is a corded Mini from our last Poodle Specialty (you can see that the topknot thing gets tricky:
