Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I was looking through the forums & I saw a few recipes but other than zukes which I can't seem to find no one else mentioned favorite healthy economic dog treats.

My 2 guys are going through tins of treats so I wondered about is making my own really cheaper esp milk bone ones & what about those treats that come in Bins at PetSmart/sense?

What are your Fav Dog Training Treat & Bigger Treats?

PS I am so thrilled to have found this site, being able to find tried & true product info & wisdom for dogs has been wonderful.

I agree, we have done treat based training.  Our trainer believes this is a great behavior when they offer positive behaviors for reward.  Rosey will do paw for everything!!  It's instinct to her now!!
i used to be able to ask Monty to do a task without a treat, now he expects it. :(  I dont really care much if we "pass" the new training level.  Its great what is being taught but he was better when treats were not the focus.
I hear you, eventually the treats have to be phased out, sounds like he is very well conditioned!  We have started replacing treats with high value toys with Rosey.  She has 2 balls she would do anything for and we have included those with her training.  Still reward but not food.
yah, he keeps doing stuff without being asked.  i say sit, he will sit then lay, then stand waiting for the treat, he isnt listening to me anymore.
hmmm. I see your point.  I will have to ask my trainer about this.  She said getting the dog to the point of offering positive behaviors to please you was a good thing.  But if you don't want them to stand only sit...I will have to let you know!!

Though I am not a professional I have a lot of dog training under my belt, so to speak.

I often recommend that treats work great in the beginning but weaning off treats for affection as they truly master their lessons is the goal.

I have returned to using treats for both dogs as I train my Doodle because I have seen my Doodle Brinkley catches on much faster as he watches my lab run through the lessons.

It also helps Sammy the Lab not feel any jealousy towards Brinkley.

What my trainer is actually saying is that treats have their place in training.

We do actual obediance training with out treats. The sit, stay, come, etc. You might not be able to provide a treat every time you ask them to sit/stay.

I do use treats to work on becoming the perfect dog for vet visits and grooming visits. For the groomers- I pull out the clippers, he gets a treat. He sniffs the clippers=gets a treat. I touch the clipper to his back (clippers off/unplugged), he gets a treat. The clipper touches his leg, gets a treat. On and on till I am able to clip his hair. Same thing with Dremmeling his nails.

i think that if i had my CGC trainer for this level it would have been better.  He did so much for so little, now we are expected to treat, treat, treat.  It doesnt matter too much for me, as I signed him up for something to do. Most folks are trying for that perfect dog that comes, walks around to your side and sits etc.  Monty is well behaved so...........its an experience.

This is what I did with Murphy, weaned him off of the treats.

BTW, he LOVES the Nutro blueberry treats. Cheese is a really high value treat for him (though it turns him into a cheesehead and focus becomes an issue). Cesar wet food is like cocaine for him.

yes, i want to wean him off, last week i didnt take the chicken that makes him  wild. still, he seemed to remember what we did in cgc and was ignoring my commands.  oh well, otherwise he is an awesome dog.  when i take him to 'Baltimore/Hilton he is wonderful with people. and so........
I have also started giving Monty slices of raw sweet potato.  he goes crazy for these too.
peeled? and how thick?
