...I'm sure this must be covered - but I have searched and can't find the answer I need!

I have a boy....and I am going to attempt to do my own grooming (after a few bad groomer sessions) and got the tools...so I am just about ready - but one thing scares me!!

I read not to use scissors on his privates...so I have clippers. But how do I do it? Do I go right over his 'little bit' and will it not catch or snag on anything important? What is a good size to use? Do I use the same clipper on his whole belly?

..thanks for any help you can give me...and Magic will thank you too!!

There are a few safety rules for using clippers.

A number 10 blade is the normal blade for this. 30 or 40 is considered surgical close so don't go there. Too much risk for a scrape.

Stay away from skip tooth blades. The number 7 skip tooth is the most dangerous blade of all yet it is fabulous for sculpting and blending.

Check your blade every 10 sec by quickly touching it to the underside your forearm. Another delicate skin place. This is a good habit to get into for every shaving job. The longer the teeth on the blade, the slower it heats up.

You can cut against the hair growth for the belly. This makes it easier to lift the hair away from the body. The blade does not touch the skin or it barely touches the skin.

If scissoring, put the comb between your dog's skin and the scissors. I see Sally read that in a previous post of mine. Thank you Sally for reposting it in this discussion.

You could put the comb between the scissors and clipper too. Neither of these will give a very close shave, but better a bit more hair than the alternative.

great info - going to print this off!

...thank you...

My pleasure, Barb.  It is nice to be able to "remember" the tips to post them; I really should print them off, too.

You have been a great help to me, for sure!  : )   !  And, I know the dogs I groom, just my daughter's and mine, appreciate you, too.
