HELP...Red Mark by Rua's privates

Last night I noticed that Rua had what looked like a little scab, surrounded by a red ring right before her pee-pee.  I gave her a bath and washed the area last night.  Tonight I checked it again.  The dark area is much larger and the ring around it is raised and slightly red.  She also has, what looks like an abrasion above and slightly to the left.  I just now wiped it with hydrogen pyroxide. 

 

We went to California last Thursday and just came back late Tuesday.  She was playing quite a bit with her "cousin" Remy, so I suppose it is possible she got bit.  But, equally possible, it was a bite from some insect.  I don't have her on any flea/tick stuff right now (the vet said I could wait and start in spring...didn't think about that in bringing her out to California). 

 

She doesn't seem bothered by it...no problems with eating, potty or pooing!  Same energy level as normal.

 

Any ideas????  Should I take her to the vet hospital tomorrow morning if it still looks like this or should I go now????  I told my DHI was going to take a picture and post it...he was appalled I would post her little pee-pee...but I told him that I was sure someone would know what this was and what we should do!

WOW, NANCIE!  This totally makes sense - my son got cellulitis around Christmas on his toe... kept POURING Hydrogen peroxide on it throughout the day and soaking it in Epsom salt  (he did get antibiotic also) ... The skin around his toe has peeled and is a pinkish color even to this day!

Also, the ointments that are recommended are Bacitracin and Neomycin.  No Neosporin!!!

If ringworm is suspected, Bacitracin and Neomycin would not be appropriate. These are both antibiotics which are only suitable for treating bacterial infections. Ringworm is a fungal infection and there are many anti-fungal creams that can be bought over the counter at the drug store. These usally contain ingredients such as miconazole, clotrimazole, ketoconazole, etc. Just ask your pharmacist. Good luck!

Is it possible she had tick bite?   I would have a Vet look at it, just to be safe and rule out Lyme disease which causes a bullseye type rash.   You usually can't see it on a dog because of the hair, but it sort of looks like that in the picture.   Take the picture with you, if the rash starts to fade.   It also looks a little like ringworm and yes dogs can get ringworm.   Easily treated with an antifungal.   It is a little hard to see in the photo, but it almost looks like two spots?  If that were the case, then I don't think it would be Lyme.

 

Nancy is right, full strength peroxide is not the best to use on a wound,  Betadine is better to use on wounds for cleaning.  Hope this info helps and Rua is ok.    She is such a cutie!

Dori, I agree that perhaps you should have your vet look at it - it could be a tick bite and you'd want to know about that.  Also if you are coming to Florida (yipee - watch out DK for some really cute Rooney and Rua photos!) she should be on Flea & Tick.  Rooney gets his year round down here so while at the Vet get her what she'll need for that.  Please give us an update when you find out!

Here is an updated picture that I just took.  It doesn't look like ringworm...it looks like the entire mark is brownish...kinda like a mole with a dark scab-like thing in the middle (went from red around it to brown).  It doesn't look infected, doesn't seem to be bothering her...but it is getting bigger.  I didn't put any more hydrogen peroxide on it (based on comments), but haven't done any creams yet.  So, do I call the vet and take her to the hospital???  Or wait and see???

You know, I would just take  her in to see the Vet, just to ease my mind. If she is acting ok, I would do it on Monday.   And take both pictures with you, so they can see what the progression looked like.   Photos are always a great idea!    I do that with myself, my family and my pets when the Drs and Vets are not open. Things change from day to day and this way you can help them see what things looked like.    You are a smart lady!

It doesn't really look bigger. The scab may mean it's healing. I don't see signs of spreading infection or anything. I personally would just watch it but then that may not be best for you.
