Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

DH is gone for a few days, so I am home alone. I was checking doors and locks last night before bed and I had that insecure feeling of how vunerable I was home alone. Then I looked at Murphy right behind me and I realized I felt so much safer having him with me, because at the very least he would alert me to an intruder.

I then wondered...what would he do if someone really did try to break in? Would he go greet them at the door and lick them like he does with every visitor? Would he go hide under the bed if they scared him leaving me out there to fend for myself?  Would he sense my fright and stay by my side or would he go attack (do doodles ever attack?) the intruder?  I have never heard of any of us having our dog protect us in a scary situation.  I know when I fell and got hurt while walking him once he sat right by my side, leaned into me and whined while I cried. So I think he would just stay near me. Anyone have other experiences with your doodle protecting you?

Okay, I found a Lab trained in protection work so I am thinking a doodle with the right temperament could be too!! :) I tried to embed the video into my comment but...  no joy!  Hopefully this link will work!

I was just saying my lab is from a drug police dog father, labs have a loyalty that can go pretty deep that includes protection. I am thinking my Shepadoodle will be the same way.

That is interesting that your pup's dad was a drug police dog!! I would definitely think your Shepadoodle could have some protection instincts because standard poodles can be pretty protective as well as the Shepherds.

I would think that LD's would probably lean more that way then GD's. It is hard to imagine a protection Golden Retiever but I guess anything is possible!!

Watch out for the "ferocious Scooby". Made me laugh to hear them call him scooby.
I KNOW that made me laugh too!! I can't remember-are your pups LD's or GD's?
My two are GD's.  So if we are thinking the LD's "might" be protective, I think I am SOL, when it comes to having 2 GD's.  Bella doesn't count yet, because she just follows Murphy when he barks because she is nosey. Not for any protective reasons that's for sure.

Princesses are not here to protect YOU!! :)

Yep, sounds like you are pretty much SOL and I am right there with ya!!

This is true, when you weigh in the Princess factor I am doomed. She hides between our legs all the time now wanting me to protect her from the big bad Murphy when he chases her!

Skeet has a BIG bark and a very scary growl, however once over the threshold I think I'm on my own. The bark and

growl would certainly make someone think twice.

Yeah, I picture a lot of barking and growling, but they'd be about 10 feet away while doing it and I'd be on my own too!  Or better yet, Murphy would go run and get him a toy like he does when anyone comes to the door.
My Lab is from a drug police father so labs can be trained for protection a Labradoodle would prob have similar abilities.
Vern has a very manly bark and would at least alert us to intruders. Fudge's bark is pretty high pitched and not as fierce, but both of them would bark. I think they would both do their best to protect us.
