DH is gone for a few days, so I am home alone. I was checking doors and locks last night before bed and I had that insecure feeling of how vunerable I was home alone. Then I looked at Murphy right behind me and I realized I felt so much safer having him with me, because at the very least he would alert me to an intruder.

I then wondered...what would he do if someone really did try to break in? Would he go greet them at the door and lick them like he does with every visitor? Would he go hide under the bed if they scared him leaving me out there to fend for myself?  Would he sense my fright and stay by my side or would he go attack (do doodles ever attack?) the intruder?  I have never heard of any of us having our dog protect us in a scary situation.  I know when I fell and got hurt while walking him once he sat right by my side, leaned into me and whined while I cried. So I think he would just stay near me. Anyone have other experiences with your doodle protecting you?

Murphy has a huge bark. If I am upstairs in bed for the night and my college age son is home for the weekend, he cannot sneak in without Murphy alerting me. Its starts with a deep growl and escalates from there. He always sleeps at the foot of the bed facing the door.

Right before Christmas, our neighborhood had a bunch of car burglaries. A deputy came to the door to talk with me. Murphy went ballistic. The deputy refused to come inside, asking me to put the dog up. I did and met him outside to talk.

Shame Murphy didn't do that when the burglar was there.

Was the big bad deputy  AFRAID of your sweet ol' Murphy?   Maybe they are more intimidating to others than we think. It's just to know a doodle is to not be afraid of a doodle in my interpetation.

Honestly, he was.  He was a big, young guy.

I couldn't make Murphy calm down....I was a bit embarrassed. Maybe Murphy doesn't like firearms?

Maybe he doesn't like cops!  Or uniforms scare him. They scare me too.

Well, the deputy was a lot more afraid of 99 lb Murphy than Murph was of him.

My saying. "aw he won't hurt you.."certainly wasn't gonna cut it.

Uniforms at my door are a bit upsetting, to say the least.

When they start yelling " Secure the Dog, Secure the Dog" and you keep saying, He won't hurt you... well they find NO humor in it.  Those deputies had their hands on their holsters when my big ol mastiff came bouncing out the door to kiss them to death at my house one night.

Hands on their holsters!!!!! I think I would have to go to jail for kicking a deputy in the shins.

Joanne, that is scary.. and a scenario I didn't ever think about with Murphy.

The deputy definitely had that NO humor look in his eye. Actually it was just fear.

I guess if I ever get flooded in again, when the deputies come around in the rescue boat, I better hope it isn't him.

Oh gosh, could you imagine them NOT letting Murphy get in the rescue boat because they were afraid of him?  I think I would have to give Greg a call and have him help me with that gun of his.
The dog is getting in the boat no matter what the guy says.  Throw him overboard.  More room for you and Murphy
HAHA.  Mama Bear protects her doodle!!!!
This could start a whole new thread....what WE would do to protect THEM!!!!!
