ANAL glands??? WHAT?

After reading a thread on food and sensitive tummies, I learned about ANAL glands and squeezing them!!!!  Is this something I must do, the vet does and how do I know when it has to be done?

Both of our boys empty their anal glands by themselves.  I think that if they have good firm stools you don't really have too much to worry about.  My older one also seems to do it when he is nervous, usually when he is in the car!!  We get a whiff, look at each other, grimace, and drive the rest of the way with the windows open!!

Oh my gracious! I feel for you in the cold weather but then again the heat most likely doesn't help either!
