Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I have a 3 year old mini labradoole who is a seizure dog. She is currently on Phenobarb and is having breakthrough seizures. Our Vet is going to add neurontin as a second seizure medication. This is a new drug they are having success with as an "add on" drug with the Phenobarb.
I was wondering if anyone out there has a doodle on this medication and how they are doing.
I am going to start the medication tonite and see how she does.

Hi Mary. We have a group here on DK for owners of dogs with epilepsy and seizure disorders. Many of the dogs in the group are on phenobarbitol and other medications. There are also members who have had success with some natural treatments.
Please join, there is a lot of help and support there.
Mary -
Our dog Mariner had been on Phenobarb which was not fully controlling his seizures. We went to Potassium Bromide about six months ago and have not had any seizures since. It took about 6 or 7 weeks to regulate the dosage but he is now seizure free and having a wonderful quality of life. An advantage of the Potassium Bromide is that it is relatively inexpensive - we pay about $45 for a bottle that has lasted for 6 months. Our vet gets it for us.
An important point is that you must be careful as some preparation of Neurontin contains Xylitol - a poison for dogs.
This is a link to a study on Neurontin for canine seizures:

And as Karen suggested please join the Seizure Disorder and Epilepsy Group, we have a lot of information and people who have dogs with similar issues.
