I just gave Stella a marrow bone, which she loves. I boiled it before hand. Are they better cooked or raw?

That's a great idea Jennifer. I fill her Kong with peanut butter but a bone would be even better! Thanks for the info.

NO cooked pig femurs. Jack almost died from a smoked hambone last November, which was packaged and sold specifically for dogs.

Thanks, Karen.  I read your post at the time, but I was wondering if these that were fresh, from the pit, would be any better than the ones packaged for dogs.
I wouldn't risk it. The cooking softens them too much.
Thanks.

Everyone here has been very helpful when it comes to things for a dog to chew, but I have to admit, I am confused, very confused!!!

No rawhide, right!?...What about Dentley's compressed rawhide?

Antlers, no?  Moose antlers, Yes? (softer)

Real bones?  First off, do I ring the bell at the grocery store and ask the butcher for a dog bone?  A femur?

Nyla (?) bones...those totally confuse me...there are about 20 different kinds!!

Bully sticks....   stinky....but dogs like them, right..I can find non stinky ones.

No "milk bones"

Do I have it?!?!?!?!

Pretty much. The marrow bones are sometimes packaged and out in the meat case here, otherwise you could ask.

i gave the raw (frozen) one to my 2 dogs.  they loved them but smelled nasty after a short time.  i was so grossed out.  raw meat mess all over the place from the small pieces that come inside and meat still attatched.

I go with the peanut butter stuffed red barn ones and then restuff with peant butter.  Also, take a medium kong and stuff with amixture of kibble for small dogs (smaller pieces) and wet food.  stuff it (not too tight at first or they cant get the stuff out).  Then i freeze it in a baggie (packages of 2 myself so the dog walker can give it to them).  I also stick something out the end of it.  most of it stuck out.  either a puparoni or an easy to break up stick sized rawhide.  the problem with rawhide is the big pieces breaking off and getting swallowed.  the stick ones are pressed together with small little pieces.

My 2 love them.

You may want to take a look at the ingredients in Pupperoni: From the label: Beef, Meat By-Products, Soy Grits, Sugar, Liver, Salt, Propylene Glycol, Garlic Powder, Caramel Color, Natural Smoke Flavor, Potassium Sorbate (used as a preservative),Sodium Nitrite (for color retention), Red 40, BHA (used as a preservative), Onion Extract.
Here are some of the dfefinitons of these ingredients:
Propylene Glycol A colorless viscous hygroscopic liquid, CH3CHOHCH2OH, used in antifreeze solutions, in hydraulic fluids, and as a solvent. Used as humectant in semi-moist kibble to keep it from drying out. May be toxic if consumed in large amounts, and should definitely not be an ingredient in a food an animal will eat daily for weeks, months or even years of its life. In countries of the European Union, propylene glycol is not cleared as a general-purpose food grade product or direct food additive. Red 40 (artificial color)
The color additive FD&C Red No. 40 is principally the disodium salt of 6-hydroxy-5-[(2-methoxy-5-methyl-4-sulfophenyl)azo]-2-naphthalenesulfonic acid.

The most widely used food dye. While this is one of the most-tested food dyes, the key mouse tests were flawed and inconclusive. An FDA review committee acknowledged problems, but said evidence of harm was not "consistent" or "substantial." Like other dyes, Red 40 is used mainly in junk foods. Personally I'd rather avoid this ingredient and err on the side of caution.
BHA Butylated Hydroxysanisole - a white, waxy phenolic antioxidant, C11H16O2, used to preserve fats and oils, especially in foods.

Banned from human use in many countries but still permitted in the US. Possible human carcinogen, apparently carcinogenic in animal experiments. The oxidative characteristics and/or metabolites of BHA and BHT may contribute to carcinogenicity or tumorigenicity

i actually do not use them anymore.  i use the pressed small sticks of rawhide but I wanted to give others options.  Thanks for the info.  I did not know most of that info.

9 inch braided bully sticks last the longest.  (but dont ask what a bully stick really is)  (a bull's stick... get it???)

But they love them.  How old is yours?

make sure you have the real bully stick and not the fake one from petsmart. (and other stores) it is also made from redbard.  Mine flew threw the fake one but not the real one.  I think the fake one is called a "bully chew" not bully stick which comes in a red box  with a lot of them to choose from in the pet stores.
