Last night, sleeping next to, head on the pillow, Porter let out two of the most mournful and deep howls I have ever heard.  Why would he do this??  He has never howled before.  He has moaned at harmonicas and people singing.  His friend howls with ambulances, but not recently in his presence as far as I know.

These howls were deep and beautiful and a bit disturbing...then he woke up and looked around like saying, huh?

maybe he was dreaming?
Bad dream...or any dream?? My doodles cry, bark, and even wag their tails in their sleep all the time.  I wouldn't be too worried.  =)
Maybe he got in touch with his inner wolf?? LOL! I agree that he had a dream about SOMETHING that was howl worthy!!
Oh this just made me laugh! LOL  His "inner wolf"! LOL  Too funny!
I am sure he was dreaming, maybe of a little doodle girl!! LOL!!
Ours does this sometimes too!! We think he sounds like Chewbacca!!! it's hilarious!!
I am going to guess dreaming ~  Hunter is a very vocal dreamer ~  she whine's, whimpers, barks, runs while laying on her side ~ its really entertaining!  Its funny because me and both my daughters talk and walk in our sleep so she fits right in!!
Vern wags his tail all the time when he is sleeping and Fudge will make all kinds of noises. I think Porter was having a bad dream.

Sunny is a very active dreamer. She kicks, runs, barks, whimpers, and STILL SUCKLES in her sleep. It's incredibly cute, but sometimes annoying since she sleeps right next to me. I've noticed that she sleeps more soundly when she is touching me.

I suspect you all are right, and I am such a dope I forgot to mention in my post my central question--if it could be from the antihistimine he's been getting at night for several days.  He's been super itchy so I put him on one pill a night (compared to the 2 at night, one during the day the vet recommended last time)--I get a little worried about meds and the itching/licking is not severe. "Some side effects include" sleep disturbance and hallucinations!

BUT based on all you guys report, and his ultra-low dose, I'd bet it was his inner-Chewbacca-romantic-angst-y wolf.

My dachshund gets an antihistamine at a very low dose every night, too, and she just snores the same as she always has. No howling or whining, just grandpa-like snores!!
Halas has howled like that in his sleep before.  The times he did it, I looked at him, and he was still sound asleep.  I think he was dreaming.
