Seizure?

I went to get dressed for the day and Charlie didn't follow me into the bathroom like he usually does.  I didn't think much of it because sometimes if he is tired after our walk he will sleep on the tile floor in the foyer.  As I got out of the shower, I could here his tags on his collar jingling wildly and I ran out and saw him wildly running around kind of like skipping, losing his balance maybe...like he was really scared and couldn't just run right.  I picked him up and he was just shaking and trembling out of control.  After a few minutes he settled down and justs wants to be held now.  I could tell by the look on his face that he was really scared.  He is going to see the vet in a few hours (my favorite is in surgery till then) unless something else happens in the mean time.  Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be or other things I should think about to mention to the vet when I take him in?  I didn't notice him eat anything strange on our walk.  Haven't found any piles of vomit around.  Thanks for anything you can recommend.

I had a 12 yo golden who had a seizure and he ran around like he was trying to get away from himself.  Crying and pooping as he ran.  A second seizure a few days later he was confined (in a groomers tub) and was just flailing away in a more classic seizure. We went thru extensive testing (and expensive) to see if it was epilepsy or brain tumor although the treatment was the same...phenobarb.  After he was medicated, no more seizures.  I have heard of one time seizures also but best to get him checked out.  Good luck with Charlie.

I don't know whether to call it a "seizure" it definitely was some type of "episode".  You can get lots of information in the "Seizure Disorder: Group  http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/seizures 

I would recommend a full blood panel but I would stay away from having any other tests run until you see what the blood panel shows and if Charlie has any future episodes.  Many times dogs will have a seizure or something similar and never have another incident.  These incidents can be brought about from environmental stimuli and/or stress etc.

Oh No Charlie!!!! It sounds like a seizure to me. Is it possible that he got into something he shouldn't have? I hope the vet brings you comfort and helps you get to the bottom of things. My friends doodle has a seizure disorder that came on from an injury. He is on medications and now only has them once in a while.

 

I hate when things are wrong with our babies, I know for me, I would rather it be me then Jack. I am sending prayers and hoping the vet gives you great advice. Let us know what happens.

Our little Olivia had a similar episode about two weeks ago.  It was the night after one of our ice and snow storms.  It was about 10 pm.  She was pacing around our coffee table, then ran upstairs, ran back down, climbed behind my sister on the sofa, the around the table again and urinating.  She jumped up on the sofa with me, laid on her back and was trembling just as you described Charlie's episode.  She calmed down after 30 seconds or so, then poo'd a little on the blanket.  We took her out and she poo'd more (it seemed healthy).  We then rushed her to the emergency vet (icy, treacherous roads).  She was still panting when we got to the vet.  After her check up, all seemed fine, heart rate, temperature, she was walking fine.  We took her home after about 30 minutes and she has been fine since then.  Our regular vet called us in the morning and said to call if we needed them.  It's been over two weeks and she seems fine.  The emergency Vet called what we described as a seizure.  Olivia is due for an annual next month so we will have the blood work done at that time.  The seizure group has lots of good info on natural medications and suggestions on putting our Doodles on the stronger meds which have lots of side effects.  Keep us posted.  We will keep thinking of Charlie and hoping he is fine.  We understand how scary this is for you.

I'm so sorry to hear this.  I know how frightening that is to witness.  Murphy had a seizure a few months ago, but it was apparently from a high fever.  Sending good thoughts that you will hear positive news from the Vet.

Thanks to all of you for your thoughts, advice and stories.  The vet thinks that Charlie did have a petite "mal"(?) seizure from the description I gave to him of what happened.  He is running a full blood work up to make sure that there are not any other reasons for it.  I should have the results sometime tomorrow.  I am going now to join the seizure group. I reallly appreciate your responses.  I was, and still am, a nervous wreck about this and have lots of questions about it.  This community is really great.
