Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Our dog Rosie was extremely sick and we took her to the emergency pet hospital on Friday evening. She tested positive for Addison disease. We found out the following at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labradoodle

"A significant number of Mutigenerational and Australian Labradoodles have also been found to suffer from Addison's Disease.[25] The Australian Labradoodle Association of America is currently conducting a study to try and determine how widespread the problem has become." (footnote url - http://www.goldendoodles.com/health_hereditary/addisons_disease.htm)

Our breeder was not part of the Australian Labradoodle Associaion of America. Breeders should test their dogs for Addison and not breed them. Girls are effected twice as much as the boys and both parents have to be carrier for the dog to have it.

It has been heartbraking to see Rosie so sick and with daily drugs and a shot every 25 days she should be ok. This makes me think twice about which breeder I will pick for our next doodle.

The vet and nurse checked for gums. Rosie's gums were pink, no spots on them. I will keep that in mind. That is a good tip. I am sorry your Jack is predisposed. It is so hard to hear. Hopefully he will never have a crisis and be there to support you always. My Rosie gets worried when I am sick, does Jack comfort you when you are not feeling well? May be technology will get ahead of this thing one day. Thank you again for the support.

Karina, Jack is not the one with Addison's disease I am.. Me the human. I do go into crisis on occasion but I have great family and neighbors who know what to look for and how to help me. Jack is only predisposed because of the poodle in him, He does not have the disease.

I totally know what it is like and I am glad I can lend any support you may need,

Jennifer

Sorry to hear about Rosie.  Remember on DK you have a great support group.

In the "Health and Medical Group" there is a listing of members that have special interest and knowledge about many issues and are willing to share their knowledge.  http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/healthandmedicalissues/forum/topi...

I believe Rae is listed as a person with knowledge on Addison's.

There is a study being done at UC Davis for Addison disease. We are going to go there to give them her blood sample. Anything to help the cause. I think they also have the send the swab back program.

http://cgap.ucdavis.edu/Addisons.htm

wow I can't believe they are doing a study.. There is NOT any current studies in humans with Addison's disease.. It is rare to have in humans but secondary addison's is becoming more common.

I guess the dogs are going to have to lead the way for a cure in this disease...

There are clinical trials and studies of Addison's disease in humans that are current according to this:

http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/results?term=addison%27s+disease

isn't that interesting? wow, how strange ha? our doodles helping the greater cause of Addison's wow. I hope one day the doodle breed can mix this issue and may be one day there can be a better detection test.
I believe good breeder's try to avoid breeding dogs with Addison's disease period. Of course, sometimes, the disease is not apparent before the affected dog has already been bred. Still, this site has over 7,000 people who have doodles, some of them more than one. Yet I don't think we've heard of more than a few with this disorder. I would be very interested in knowing what the true incidence of Addison's disease is in the doodle population.
Yeah but only a small percentage of members of any site actually participate (whether they have problems or not).  So unless we could figure out a way to get all 7,000 members to respond to a health survey (which would be amazing!) I'm not sure it's an easy statistic  to figure out.  How much money would it take to get all 7,000+ to respond???  LOL...just kidding.

All true but I think people with a serious problem are more likely to seek advice and support, which is why I think problems seem more prominent than they may be. But an appropriate bribe for a survey, hmmm---I know, a Motorola Xoom to the first respondent. Okay, neither of my doodles have Addison's disease to date. I'll send you my address for the prize.

To be more serious, Addison's is a serious disease and I hope the breeders are looking into the true incidence. I wish there was a way we, as dog owners, could steer each other away from problem breeder's. But I guess sometimes any disease can be a random happening.

But even the poodle health registry experts claim ALL poodle lines have it.  So there's no way to really guarantee an Addison's disease free poodle.  All they can do and have been advised to do is to breed a high risk or Addison's carrier poodle to a lower risk poodle,

Addison's disease is not a disease that a breeder can detect, The breeder most likely didn't do anything wrong, just like my parents didn't do anything wrong for giving birth to me. Addison's disease happens, If I was to have a child it most likely would NOT have Addison's disease. It is the luck of the draw...

I do think breeding a dog as much as you are saying is not fair to the dog, My breeder only allows a dog to have pups three times and then they retire.
