Poor Huff!

Yesterday, Huff was playing with his big, red Jolly Ball

He was running back and fourth in our shop when one of his nails got caught in the grate of the drain in our shop. It almost broke off and it is hurting him a lot today. I think his nail is dying and is going to fall off but for now it is still hanging on. He has been in a bad mood today and yesterday. Today, a bulldog jumped on him and he kind of snapped which he never does. I think he is in pain. He doesn't want to put a lot of pressure on that paw. This week, he has had his ear issues (by the way, his ear is getting better. I don't know what it was. It got better before we got to take him to the vet. Weird, right?) Now he has this nail issue. What do you think we should do about this nail issue? What would you do? Poor Huff:(

I would definitely take him to the vet...a dogs nails are different than humans.  It really should be seen by your vet if it is nearly falling off.  This is VERY painful for them and they can bleed a lot from this.  While you are there maybe the vet can check out his ears too.  I hope Huff feels better soon.

Ya, It isn't exactly hanging it has like a cut in it or something He has stopped bleeding from it though which is good:) Thanks. I think we will take him:)

I second that.   I would take him to the  Vet and let them check out the nail.  They can safely remove it, if necessary and be sure an infection isn't setting in.    Also, they can help him with any pain he is having.  Poor Huff!  Let us know how he gets along with this.

Ya, I am putting Hydrogen Peroxide on it for now to make sure it doesn't get infected but I think we will be taking him to the vet soon:)

Poor Huff!  I haven't had that happen to Rua, thank goodness, so I don't have first hand knowledge.  But, it looks like a trip to the vet would be a good thing.  Hope Huff is over his injury soon.  Rua sends hugs and Doodle Kisses!

OK...so u say it isn't falling off.  That kind of scared me when u said that in your post.  If it is cracked thru the nail...wrap up his paw ...this happened to my brothers lab this winter and they put a sock on the dogs foot and wrapped the sock with tape(they used hockey tape...we are Canadian eh and we always have a supply of hockey tape) to keep the sock on to prevent any dirt etc from getting into the injury.  Try this until u can take him to the vet.

So let me see if I under stand this.... wrap up the paw with first aid tape then put a sock on and wrap it at the top so it doesn't fall off? Is it supposed to keep the nail from falling off?

 Don't put the tape around his paw! Put the sock on and then wrap tape around the sock to prevent the sock from falling off. This will keep his nail from getting any more irritated...like if it catches on something and becomes even more painful for your poor dood.  Then take him to the vet tomorrow.  It must be hurting him as you said he is grumpy and snapped at the bulldog. Poor guy...try this and let us know how it goes at the vet.  Good luck...and my doodle Thomas sends licks for Huff!!

Definitely take him to the vet. Sore and split nails can be very painful for a dog and need to be treated by a vet.

Yes, I think it is really hurting him. He seems to be grumpy which he hardly ever does. I think we will have to take him in soon.

Until you can get to the vet tomorrow, I would put some peroxide on it just to clear out germs and perhaps you might put a sock on that foot to cushion it.. The vet may need to remove the loose nail so and not to do more damage.  I would also have the vet look at his ears just to make sure something isn't in there bothering him.
