Ginger is such a good girl and is perfectly house trained in our house.  Our backyard is right out the backdoor, so not problem with finding the "right spot". My daughter would like to petsit for me, but she lives on the 18th floor.  How do you teach a puppy (5 months) to go stand by the door in a new place and then hold it in the elevator until she can get to a good spot?

Is she going to be pet sitting in the immediate future?  The reason I ask, is that I would think that once the concept of you potty outside is in place, she would understand that regardless of where she is, she needs to be out in the grass to potty.  As an example, when we stay at a hotel, our girls know that once they tell us they need to potty, that we have to get out of the room and outside to potty.  We haven't had a problem.   If she is going to do it now, I guess that I would just handle it the same way that I would with a new puppy in any house, and that would be to just take her out very often when she first comes to give her the idea of where she goes to ask to go out, that she has to go down in the elevator, then outside before pottying.  If I was able, I would probably carry her the first several times to make sure.  I'm not an expert in this area, this is just how I would personally go about trying it!
thank you...all that makes sense!!!
They just go sit by the door - any door.  No problems in Florida, however, I had to hold Jax going down in the elevator.  He would wait until we got to the grass outside.
i would put them on a set schedule to potty, Of course when they wake up in the morning, then about an hour  after they eat, then every few hours after that. I wouldn't depend on them to tell you at that age. I would just give ample chances to go even if it is a little overboard..
If you do bell training at home and then take the bells with you and put them near the exit door that will help.  I take my dog to visit friends who have  a backyard and Sadie, on her own, has a pee pee location in their yard.  Our dogs are smart.  She does this without the bells...
