I live in a relatively crime free area and I certainly don't want a vicious guard dog, however I do like a dog that will bark at an intruder.

We have a couple come and clean our home a few times a year. They are hard and conscientious workers and will clean two homes each day; thus when we are the second home on their schedule for the day - they do not finish until well after dark.

Holly was with us in the bedroom after dark when the man knocked at our sliding glass door to tell us that they had completed the cleaning.

Our Holly, who used to be very timid, let the guy know in no uncertain terms that he was not welcome in our yard after dark. Especially not knocking on our door with a mop in his hand.

I was very proud of Holly. If I were an intruder, I don't think that I would have entered the house with this sixty pound dog barking angrily at me. After-all, Holly is often mistaken for a soft-coated Wheaton terrier who can be pretty formidable watch dogs.

I could never depend on my Lucy being a watch dog. She is sooo people friendly and playful, that if a burglar broke in she would show them the safe if they would play with her. A watch dog she is not!
Our Giada does bark a bit, but as she timidly backs away. Mybe this is her age, I am hoping that she becomes a bit more assertive as she gets older because it is nice to let strangers know you have a dog that is not happy about what is going on. So, what age was she when she became less timid? Giada is 9 months old.
All three of my dogs are GREAT watch dogs...TOO good. OF course once a guest has entered our house, they are just overly friendly dogs...but they don't miss a person outside for barking!
My Mocha barks at EVERY sound. She seems like a very nervous dog. We actually have to keep her with us in the bedroom and put her in her crate (which she sometimes prefers) so she actually gets some sleep. The poor girl would watch over us 100% of time if I let her.... the barking sometimes is annoying....I'm having a hard time stopping it if we are just in the yard and when she shouldn't be so protective, but we would for sure be warned!!
In just the last couple of weeks, Cali has started barking if someone rings the doorbell or knocks at the door. She barks now if the girls have people come over and they come through the front door. So although it is nice to know that she is watching over us, she is barking from the couch, she doesn't leave the couch. It is very funny to watch her. So if we have any burglars come in, I hope they are couch potato burglars so that my mean dog could scare them away..... lol!!
