A few days ago (Thursday or Friday), we gave Huff a sanitary trim. She shaved in between his paw pads and his sanitary area (including his butt). Now, his butt is bothering him. He keeps rubbing it on the floor and I noticed last night that it has a red spot on each side of it. I put some medicated baby powder on it and it seemed to calm it a little. Our doodles are babies, aren't they? I don't think it is his anal glands because at least twice, now I have smelled something like expressed anal glands. Does anyone have any idea as to what this is and how iI can make it go away? Thanks for your help.:)

You just shaved his butt too close and it itches!  I never do Gracie to the skin.  They get razor burn and it burns and stings at first and then as it heals it itches.  When I do use clippers on Gracie I always use the smallest comb attachment so it keeps me from ever getting to the skin.  I also trim with scissors more than a clipper in that area.  Baby powder will be just fine or even use some neosporin or something to calm it down.  Mr. Huff will be fine in a few days.  Poor baby!
Thanks:) He seems better today. We put baby powder on it again because he was dragging his butt again haha:)

The groomer might have shaved his fanny a little too close or he jumped and has a bit of razor burn. I would try some tea tree oil spray. For puppies over 6 months old, I like Vet's Best Hot Spot Spray available online or at  PetsMart. It is not just for hot spots, but for dermatitis and skin irritations as well. It has tea tree oil, chamomile, aloe vera. I'd lay off the medicated baby powder because he is probably licking his rear and I wouldn't want him to ingest any of it. If Huff is younger than 6 months, you might try some aloe vera (without added botanicals or herbs) from a health food store.

I think we have tea tree oil spray. Maybe not in spray form but in a gel. Is that okay, do you think. No, Huff is almost 1 year and 9 months old. The active ingredients in the baby powder are: Topical Starch (cornstarch, Zinc Oxide

It Also contains: Aloe Barbadenis, Tocopheryl Acetate (vitamin E), Fragrance

Could this ingredients be toxic to him do you think?

Thanks:)

It is a Hot Spot and you probably need to get some hot spot medicine.  I have some from the vet but I am sure a pet store would have some.  The spots are pretty painful from what the vet told me. Hope your baby gets relief soon!
Aren't hot spots usually open sores? This one isn't open it is just like a red spot on his skin.
Hot spots look just like a rash before the bacteria gets active enough or the dog licks enough to cause an acutal sore. Checking for hot spot rashes is something you can do with a blower. They are often just in front of the hind leg or on the sides of the belly. Especially if there is any matting in these areas.
How can I prevent it from getting worse? Can I put something on it? What could have caused it?  He stops bothering it when we put the baby powder on it....

Myla does that after a sanitary trim also, it itches her. Also feels funny to sit on the ground instead of a poofy pillow!!

Hope he feels better soon. Maybe the fragrance stuff would irritate it more??

he is dragging his butt less and less everyday, so I think it is getting better. Thanks everyone for your info:)
Keep "Peace and Kindness" colloidal silver spray on hand. I get it from Chris Christensen. I also do the sanitary trim with scissors.

Nemo's groomer shaved his butt way too close, and he's very uncomfortable.  I don't see any cuts, nicks or red spots yet, but am worried he'll get a hot spot if he doesn't leave it alone.  I'm afraid to try baby powder, especially if it contains zinc, as I read somewhere about zinc poisoning.  I am going to try some grooming wipes that have Green Tea Leaf Extract.  Is that the same as Tea Tree oil, or not?  The wipes also contain Hawaiian Awapuhi Extract, Aloe Vera and Vitamin E.  I figure it can't hurt, as long as it doesn't get in his eyes (per package warning).  Any other home remedies out there?  Thanks!
