My DH had to rush Hudson to the vet today because he was drooling, lethargic, and swaying.  We think he ingested something toxic.  Apparently my landlord put fertilizer down the day we brought Hudson home and didn't tell us!!!!!  I am so angry right now.  He told us he put weed killer down on the concrete to prevent the weeds from growing in the cracks but NEVER mentioned the fertilizer on the lawn!!  When we called to ask him if he put anything on the grass he said he put the fertilizer down but didn't realize it was toxic.  I thought everybody knew that, but I guess not!  The funny thing is that in the six years we have lived here he has never used fertilizer.  I don't know what possessed him to do it now!!!!

Hudson is at the vet now. :( He didn't have a temperature and his coloring was good but the blood work showed that he had elevated nitrogen levels in his blood.  I think they were going to give him charcoal.  They have him on an IV now too.  The vet said the nitrogen is probably from the fertilizer but they did call the poison control center.  She also mentioned another possible cause of elevated nitrogen called a liver shunt.  But I looked that up and that seems to affect the smaller breeds and he hasn't been displaying any of the other symptoms.  He was also one of the larger pups from his litter and not the runt.  So hopefully it is just the chemicals that are causing this.  The vet said he should be fine from this.  I hope so!!!!  I would hate for him to have any permanent damage from this.  I've only had him 5 days and he's only 9 weeks old, poor little guy.

So now we are desperately trying to get rid of the fertilizer on the lawn.  We are watering it now but the company said it will take 3 weeks to fully get rid of it.  Where is Hudson going to go potty now???

While I'm typing this the vet just called and said he is doing better.  We have to go pick him up at 7:30 and at that time she will have a better idea if he needs to stay at an emergency hospital overnight.  Fingers crossed for the little guy.

Sorry for the long post, but did anyone else experience anything similar and how is your dog now?

Thank you for any advice you guys have.

So sorry for you guys, to be so sick at such a young age. We use fertilizer but very little in the back and wait at least a week

for it to pass through, we do it in sections so they can still potty. I really hope Hudson is ok and thanks for posting for people who might not know.

How horrible, I hope that Hudson feels better quickly!
Same thing with Stella. Had her for about a week. She nibbled on one of those Jobe tree spikes. Drooling excessively, lethargic and diarrhea. Rushed her to the vet, they induced vomiting, charcoal, IV fluids and kept her for observation for the rest of the day. She was fine that night and ever since but it sure freaked me out.
Yikes!!  Glad to hear she is ok now.  How scary for us to go through this while they are so young.
Poor Hudson.  In our province using any type of chemical on your lawn is illegal.  They don't sell them anymore.  I never thought much about it in terms of risk until now.  Hoping for the best for Hudson.
Your province has it right!!
Agreed!!!  It should be illegal everywhere!
So sorry to hear about Hudson. I hope he feels better soon and gets to come home tonight.
I'm sorry to hear about little Hudson's troubles. How frustrating to have the chemicals dump on your grass without your knowledge!! I would be crazy mad!! We are organic at our house too so I can totally relate to how you must feel!! Our prayers for a speedy and complete recovery for Hudson!
I am so sorry to hear about little Hudson's getting so sick.  You can't blame yourself, and thank goodness the vet gave you good news about him.  Hopefully you will be bringing him home tonight..Hugs to alll of you...How scary for all of you...Keep us informed please...

Yikes!!  Poor little guys.  I'm glad he's starting to do better.  We haven't treated our lawn since we had Brinkley and have the weeds and patching grass to prove it; however, we'll probably hire someone again but this time we'll use a natural/organic company.

Thought and prayers for your little baby!

Our little Hudson is home!!!  He seems to be doing so much better and is back to his playful self.  The vet wants to see him again tomorrow to do more blood work just as a precaution.  But she thinks he is fine now too.  We had to give him a can of NF food but we only gave him 1/2 of it because it seemed like so much food for him.  His belly is a little swollen :(  The vet did say he will probably have diarrhea tonight from the medicine she gave him.  Should be an interesting night!!!  We are just so happy he is home with us again.  Thanks for all of your kind words for our boy.  He says thanks to all of his doodle friends.
