Trav's lipstick...errr...red rocket gets stuck on the launching pad

This happens in the morning sometimes when he first wakes up.  WTD has he been dreaming!!??  Being alarmingly ignorant about dog problems of any kind, it took a while to realize that this is what's happening.  He stands immobile with his back hunched up, tail tucked, obviously in pain, and his undercarriage is hard as a rock, with two bumps back of the red rocket.  Yes, I actually looked and felt this time!  The rocket returns to the launch pad after about 15 minutes or so.  This was happening in January, and I took him to the vet, thinking he had a UTI.  But his urine was clean and he wasn't...uh..manifesting when the vet saw him.  We got antibiotics, and since there weren't any appearances for a while, I just assumed he'd had some infection that got cured by the medication.

But its happened two mornings in a row now!  I got busy online, trying to find out if anybody else's dog has had this problem, and whether I should rush him to the vet again.  It doesn't seem to be a major problem, unless the rocket stays on the launching pad for too long.  And there are treatments.  Yes, there are.  KY jelly.  Sugar water.  Trim hair.  For serious or prolonged manifestations:  emergency--surgery.

He's 17 mo. old now, and was neutered when he was eight weeks. 

Has anybody else's dog had this problem??

Oh-oh!  I hadn't thought of the difference in dog and human years, though I was stuck on 15-20 minutes probably being okay.  No probs this morning, but I got him up and chasing a ball first thing.  Like before coffee.  Aaaarrrggghhhh...

I don't think life span has anything to do with it :) I suspect 15 minutes is fine since when dogs mate they are sometimes tied longer than that. The main thing is to avoid vascular compromise so after an hour, according to this article, I'd see if he needs help to retract his penis. If that doesn't work, I think a vet visit is needed.

Thanks for the link, F Parker.  I'll pay attention to how long his situation lasts, and guess I'd better find out how to help.

No help here, I've only seen the red rocket once, just before Quincy was neutered at 6 mos it has not made an appearance since.

Hi, Jennifer!  I learned the terms 'lipstick' and 'red rocket' right here on DK, or I probably would have decided this subject was too graphic for general discussion.  Personally, I'm not grossed out, just interested and concerned.  But then I grew up on ranches where there's always lots of animal anatomy on display.  :)
