did the title get you excited? It sure did for me when I saw it on my Yahoo email home page..... then I went and read the article

Most sound like they are a recipe for disaster, encouraging your dog to steal your clothes thinking they are toys, or a trip to the vet for swallowing things they shouldnt.

eg

tennis balls are not safe for dogs.

its ok for your old socks to smell of you but not the jeans?  Wont they steal your socks?

Shewing on a plastic milk bottle is not safe as they can cut themselves on sharp pieces

chewing on (and eating) duct tape?????

lots of kids stuffed toys have plastic eyes and noses a dog could chew off and eat

What do you think? Are there any safe toys you have made?

Clark and I tend to avoid giving the dogs permission to play with anything that's not a dog toy or resembles real people stuff. So yeah, I probably would skip all those.  My dogs are so content with their rubber toys and bones---I just haven't found a reason to buy anything more as long as their present toys are still intact/usable.
Maggie is my perfect Doodle, she will chew and play with her toys but is not destructive.  KoKo not only chews but eats everything in sight.  She loves socks and plays tug of war with Maggie using said socks.  Then one day I couldn't find "her" socks.  That is until she barfed it up a few days later.  I didn't know about her stash and again a few days later she barfed up another sock.  I consider myself so lucky she got them up and didn't cause a blockage.  I swear that dog would steal the socks off my feet if she could.  I'm convinced Doodles will eat anything.  They are much more trouble than any two year old human I've met.  KoKo thinks everything is a toy and eatable.
I am intrigued by the "sturdy" sock lol what is that a steel boot?! Lol. Hunter does love empty 2 liter and water bottles but she doesn't eat things she just tosses them in the air. I agree it doesn't sound very safe.

I do save some of our gallon milk jugs for the dogs to play with. Mostly, they play keep away with it and if I put ice inside they go crazy. Every now and then, I throw out a Quaker oats container too :) You can only imagine how wonderful our yard looks on some occasions.
LOL!  Laurie, you mean to tell me these are not yard decorations.
Thankfully, no one can see into our back yard, or we might get reported :)
Maybe a vet needs some more business and is hoping some locals read this? The sock and treat deal sounds particularly ominous to me. If anyone has great ideas for homemade toys please put them in the DIY Group too.
For an older dog who does NOT get into your things, you could take an old terrycloth robe, cut strips and tie them together for a tug/chew.  Otherwise - nope. We have been known to give dog toys to children though!
Nancy, Vern sorta had this idea first.  He chewed my robe belt in three pieces :) Isn't he a creative dog....LOL!

I got excited too....I just made some agility equipment for Rua, so I was thinking, heck, why not try my hand at toys.  I won't give Rua any shoes or clothes-like to play...how would she know the difference between my old slipper and my good slippers.

We don't need to give Chloe these ideas-she makes a toy out of everything!

Growing up my family had a mini poodle. My Mom gave her a sock that was tied in 2-3 knots. That was the only type of sock she would play with...Like she knew socks without knots were off limits. I KNOW Louie would get that connection...he is a sock thief!!!
