Snickers has just discovered birds and geese. He will sit and stare at them and then go into stalking mode. Is this a hunting instinct or just my dog being silly. The geese particularly fascinate him while skeeving me out. So do your doodles "hunt"? Snickers will be 2 next mth and has not showed these tendencies before.

Peri does this - she has since about 6 months old.  I think it is her hunting instincts. If I were to let her go wild, she would quietly stalk and chase birds all day long.  Of course she has yet to catch one....

Yep.  We were walking one day and a flock of ducks took off near Chervil and frightened her.  Since then, she's given birds a wide berth.  But any manner of small rodent sets her in motion.  She literally ran head first into the fence chasing a rabbit.

Both of mine do this.

Oliver does this too.  He saw a bird walking down the road, and went into full stance...I was shocked, I guess it is the retriever in him...Good thing I had him on a leash, or he would have taken off after the bird..
Ooooh yea mine are big time hunters!! If we let them, they would totally try to hunt...or I guess retrieve...ducks or geese.  They get this sharp cry and go absolutely insane for squirrels and rabbits as well!  Just an instinct I think!
My Seamus actually pointed once as well....lol I tried to catch it on film, but I wasn't fast enough.
Both of my LDs will chase rabbits, squirrels, chipmonks, and deer!  My multi-gen "points" just like a pointer and stalks ducks!!  He came very close to getting one the other week!!
Peri points too.  Amazing how this is an instinct.  I certainly didn't teach her to point!

My Rocky caught a Canadian Goose a couple of years ago... it was taking off from a ditch, he lunged and got hold of the wingtip. The bird - of course - freaked out, so Rocky let it go. The goose wasn't hurt, thank goodness.

Both my dogs hunt on a daily basis and catch all kinds of critters in our yard, including smaller birds, rodents, frogs, and grass snakes. Usually the unfortunate prey ends up dead or half-dead. Both dogs seem to prefer squirrels, rabbits, and mice, probably because of the taste! Yuk... Lilo has had worms as a result of her preference for raw food, but neither has gotten really sick from munching on their kills, knock on wood...

Oh my gosh I cannot even imagine how freaked out I would be if he CAUGHT a goose! You must have some pretty interesting "presents" given to you from Lilo and Rocky!
yes, I am fairly immune to dead rodents with missing heads by now...
Yup...both of my doodles find all birds VERY interesting lol
