Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hi All!
We have had a new F1B goldendoodle for about 2 weeks now and husband had to go into the doctor today because of the severe allergies with wheezing and the whole 9!. Not sure if its because of the pup (deep down inside I feel it is), but it just so started getting really bad once we brought her home. I hate to even admit it, but it very well could be because of her, but it could also be from the pollen and stuff. I don't know now what to do...I feel torn and I hate to return her, she is such a love bug and so pretty... OH MAN!!! She does shed a bit when I hold her, but her coat is super curly, could it be Dander? Please Help!!!!
Thanks!

Without knowing what you husband's particular allergens are, it would be difficult to say if it's dog dander that's causing his symptoms, or just outside pollen, exacerbated by the fact that these dogs bring a lot of pollen into the home on their coats.
This is the time of year where people with allergies are having a very hard time even if they don't have any pets. But if your husband has never had bad spring allergy symptoms, chances are pretty good that it's the dog; it's doubtful that he first developed a seasonal allergy this year.
The choices would be for him to take antihistamines and whatever allergy treatment the doctor recommends, and live with the problem, or rehome your puppy. If you're considering the latter, please do it sooner rather than later, for her sake.
If you DH is willing to live with the problem, wiping her down thoroughly every time she comes in form the outdoors might help a little.
Thank You!!
Lily is adorable. Having allergies myself this spring seems to be more difficult. Something that helps me is to take a shower in the morning and evening. Plus I use a saline solution to flush the pollen from my nasal passages a few times a day. I would have to do this whether I had a doodle or not. Like Karen said wiping Lily down with a wet rag will help too.
Good luck.
I was just at the allergist today and asked many questions about this paticular topic!! What a coincidence!! My youngest daughter is almost 9. She is an allergy/asthma/croup mess, basically under control until this year. Right now her seasonal allergies are TERRIBLE, nothing that she takes has relieved them. Her regular doctor has changed her medication 3 times in the last 2 months and zero help. So today to the allergist we went. Stuffy head, red eyes, sneezing, coughing, etc. They did the allergy scratch tests for trees (4 different types) she was allergic to all - severly to oaks and white ash, not to grass thank goodness, ragweed was pretty severe, cats were AWFUL - the welts were instant and huge, dustmites the same AWFUL, and then she had a reaction to DOGS!! UGH!!!! It wasn't severe like everything else but definetly there. I had to ask the allergist about it because it totally freaked me out. What she told me was, it is a general "dog" test, I told her Hunter was an F1 Goldendoodle and she said that as long as she does not go in Kelsey's bedroom or sleep in her bed that it should not be an issue. She said that they find few reactions with GR's and even less to poodles. She said the main contributors to severe allergies are spaniels (I found that interesting) she said it had to do with the type of dander they had and that not all dogs produce the same dander. She also said that this year has been the worst in 20 years for tree pollens and seasonal allergies in general because it was a wet spring all across the country and since last season was a hot summer in general that there was more blooming due to the wet weather now. She also said that if someone with a severe allergy to dogs can generally do very well if they want their dog and will get allergy shots. It would also benefit Kelsey with the rest of her allergies but she said combined with the fact that Hunter won't be going anywhere that the allergy shots could be her best option. If you have your heart set on keeping your puppy, and I am sure you do, I would check with an allergist and not just a regular doctor. They are always the first to say "get rid of the animals". They do bring the pollens into the house but she also said to keep her fur cut short during the spring/summer/fall and rinse her off with just water every few days. Seemed like a pretty easy fix to me. The only animals we did get rid of on the doctors advise were the stuffed one's in her bedroom!!
One other thought, have you bathed her or used any kind of spray on her to make her smell good? My daughter is allergic to those (and so is Hunter) but it makes both of them sneeze and itch unless I use an oatmeal based shampoo and never any type of conditioning spray or perfume type spray.
