We are on vacation. Our dog sitter called to say she believes the dogs have kennel cough. She has worked at a vet so I'm sure she's right. Owen has been vaccinated but Kona has not. The vet is booked until Monday afternoon. I'm super worried although the dog sitter doesn't seem to be. Anyone with experience with this?

My Murphy had Kennel Cough, and it really wasn't all that serious.  It sounded bad, but he acted pretty normal with it.  The Vet did want to see him to confirm that it actually was Kennel Cough, and if I remember correctly she prescribed something (not sure if it was an antibiotic or a cough suppressant).  He never had a fever, and as I recall the cough lasted about a week.
Thank you for your encouragement, Jane. Had Murphy been vaccinated? Mostly worried about
My gentle giant Kona has not been vaccinated.
He had been vaccinated.  I was surprised that he would get it, but the Vet said that the vaccine does not totally protect them.  Are there any other symptoms with your guys other than just the cough?  How are they acting?
The sitter said they are playful and acting normal. We arrive home late tomorrow night.
Then I really wouldn't worry.  Enjoy your last day of vacation!
I'm very surprised the vet didn't fit them in but even worse they won't see them until the last appointment on Monday because it is so contagious. The receptionist said they could be treated with antibiotics and cough syrup. Thankfully we also have an emergency vet office so if something gets scary the sitter could take them there. Just hard being away.
I am sorry, I stand corrected Kennel cough is not a virus usually, it is caused from a bacteria, that is why antibiotics work....
Dex & Kirby got it once from boarding.  They are always vaccinated, but it doesn't protect against every strain.  They were both put on antibiotics and were back to normal in a few days.  Hope they feel better soon.
Thank you, Leslie. I just wish the vet would've seen them today instead of putting them off until Monday evening. There we go with Murphy's law that it would happen on the weekend and we are out of town!
I agree - the sooner they can get started on the antibiotics, the sooner they can get better.
