Yesterday I took Sheba to the vet because she was limping on her right front leg.  (She has done this before but vet didn't find anything torn or broken).  She plays pretty hard and she's the kind of dog that doesn't stop, always has to be busy.

Recently I noticed some slight changes in her walking and trying to stand up from a sitting or lying down position. It didn't happen all the time, just when she had played hard.  I thought maybe it had more to do with her activity level and how hard she would play and that it was probably was due to sore muscles.

I did some reading on hip dysplasia on the internet and became more concerned.  I also checked into Lyme's Disease as I have found a couple of ticks on Sheba, but that was last year.  The vet said that when Sheba got her yearly heartworm test they test for Lymes and she was negative so her mobility issues were probably not due to Lymes.

Vet put Sheba on Previcox (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) for 7 days to see if that helps her.  If her limping on her front leg gets worse I need to take her back in.  The plan is to get her hips and back x-rayed soon along with her front leg if the problem persists.

It would just break my heart if my sweet, beautiful, athletic, happy-go-lucky girl has hip dysplasia.

I know there are other members here that have dogs with this condition.  Anything you could share would be helpful.  I'll keep you all informed.

How old is she? Don't assume the worst! :) Prob overstretching herself is all :) U guys will be fine
Sheba is 2 1/2.  I hope that is the case.  She is not limping on her front leg today but she still is having the problems in her hind end. I have been keeping her from heavy activity the past couple days and will for the next week and see if she does get better.   Thank you!
Oh, poor you and your beauty, Sheba. I hope some r&r does the trick. If not, it is a little reassuring to hear the great survival stroies here. You two are in my thoughts.
Ann,   I sure am hoping for you and Sheba that she doesn't have HD, but I can understand your concern.   I would want her checked out too.    She is a beautiful girl and I just love this pic of her!
I am so sorry to hear this. I pray that it turns out to be nothing...
We will pray for proper guidence for your family and Sheba AND your vet too.  It's hard to hear the news of something like this, but she is still Sheba with or without the condition.  Love her, maybe even more than you already do, if that is possible!!!!

Hello Ann - thank you for your post - I am enjoying this site - so many beautiful doods out there!  Your doods are gorgeous! I wish I could have another one but DH say not right now!  I keep working on him.  LOL

Our sweet Beckham was diagnosed with Hip Displasia about 6 months ago at 11 months - I was devastated and now am so worried and watch him all the time - our first hint was tha he looked like a bunny rabbit when he ran, he almost did a bunny hop if you know what I mean.  I had him to the vet right away and they confirmed HD - I don't believe he is in any pain yet but I am very much into holistic health so put him on human glucosamine, tumeric (anti-inflammatory), vitamin E and Cod liver oil as well.  Beckham is also on a grain free diet and I give him fresh veggies and fruit (broccoli and bananas, apples, plums).  He is also on probiotics from the holistic vet for digestion - I take him about every three months to the holistic vet for some chiropractic/laser treatment.  With all of this he seems to be doing well and loves to run and jump.  I do limit his exercise because I know he'd go all day long!  I sure hope Sheba is doing well - glad you have her on the glucosamine - it does help - I've just recently heard about a pezzi ball on which the dog with HD would do some exercises to strengthen the core (just like the ball that we would use except it is shaped like a large peanut).  I'm going to do some more research on this - looks like you live close or near a lake - swimming is very good for HD.  Hope this helps a bit - if you need any more info I'd be happy to help you.  Take care, enjoy your doods!  Sending doodle hugs to Sheba and Duke!

Gaila and Beckham

Gaila and Beckham....our Beemer was diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia in both hips at 1 year.  I encourage you to read Beemer's blogs on the experience.  I do understand your holistic approach and I wish you and Beckham well.  Every day we are grateful for the surgeon we chose because Beemer is perfect.  Runs like the wind, jump like a jack rabbit and loves like nothing we could have ever imagined.....blessings to all....

I so agree with your choice, Penny. If it were me or my child, and there was an orthopedic problem which could be completely corrected by surgery, I would certainly opt for a life of freedom from pain and normal unrestricted movement, and that is what I want for my dogs, too.

Wishing for the very best for the gorgeous Sheba.  I know this must be a terrible worry for you but hoping for answers and solutions very soon.

Beautiful Sheba, I hope you just over did it. Feel better oh gorgeous one.

Ann posted this almost a year ago. I'm not sure how Sheba is doing now, but this is not a new discussion. I think a new member stumbled upon it in a search and didn't realize it wasn't a current discussion.
