Looking for an older Doodle to adopt :-)

Hi friends. My name is Lucinda. I'm part of a family of four. My husband Peter and I have two little boys Gray and Magnus. They are 6 and 3. We also have Sooty, our fluffy black cat. As I wrote in my bio, we had the most wonderful Goldendoodle, Anna Nicole. (AKA Nanners) She was the BEST doggie. I had wanted a dog for as long as I could remember. My parents never allowed it. Finally at 27 years old I got my puppy, and she was my shadow. Tragically we lost her at the young, young age of 3. She had a complication of Lyme disease and fell into kidney failure. Within one week of diagnosis she was gone. It was the worst week of my life.

Cut to 7 months later, we are really hoping to add another Doodle to our family. We are home a lot, but would rather bypass the super young puppy phase, plus we'd like to rescue a dog in need of a home. We live in Maryland, outside of D.C. If anyone hears of a cat and kid loving Doodle, that is somewhat close (like not in Texas or California) could you please keep us in your thoughts? There only seem to be a few on the Doodle Rescue and they are either pending or super far. Doodles on Pet Finder go incredibly fast too, and are never near our part of the country!

Hi Lucinda - my heart goes out to you for your loss.  I agree with Kyoko to keep in touch with www.doodlerescuecollectiveinc.org  Even if they aren't right in your area, often a doodletrain can be arranged to help transport.

Often times people do not realize how much work the puppies require. By adopting an older dog, you can bypass all of the puppy behaviors headaches, like nipping and chewing!! I am sure that right doodle is just waiting for you out there....

In addition to Doodle Rescue Inc mentioned above you can place an application with IDOG Rescue ( IDOG.biz )-- but with each organization you need to submit an app so it is on file.  The dogs you're looking at might be taken or too far, but you never know when they will get a wonderful doodle in foster care and those with approved applications on file will get first consideration.  Place your app and keep checking Petfinder regularly.

Often times people contact Lisa, the group leader, if they have to rehome their doodle or when they see one in a local shelter.  There have actually been more emails lately about dogs needing homes.  I know that there is also a DC doodles group, but I am not on their email list.

Thank you Christy! I can't believe you found your Doodle at the SPCA. What a rare find! I contacted Lisa, thank you. We put an application in on IDOG and never heard a thing. Doodle Rescue is always so far or they are snapped up. I will keep our feelers out. Thanks so much everyone for your help!

I know for a fact that the DRC has some adults right now that are available.  Karen (member on here) is on the board and actually just had a blog on there recently about how people aren't applying for the older dogs (and when I say older, I mean 2-3!).  Give that a try!!!

I'm not positive, but IDOG (and other rescues) often have a rule about no kids under ____ for many if not all of their dogs.  So be sure you've read their criteria and what their rules are to be sure your situations fits their requirements (fenced yards are often a must).

Hi Lucinda,  I just wanted to let you know it's a possibility the reason dogs are far away with Doodle Rescue is due to no fosters families in your area.  I wouldn't let distance stop you from filling out an application.  If a dog in your area becomes available and there is no foster family for them to be placed in until being adopted.  The dog may not go to a rescue and in up at shelter.  If a rescue has an application for adoptive family that qualifies to adopt, then they may contact you in this situation.  Have you considered fostering a dog for one of the rescues?  Foster families usually have the option of adopting their foster dog.  That way you would be able to enjoy other Doodles until your doodle finds you, It's just a thought

Also on the Doodle Rescue site there is listings of doodles being re-homed, at shelters or other rescues that are not fostered with them.  You can find the listing under Doodles in Need and it's broken into regions.  Good Luck
