When we had three dogs the key for us was that EACH had to be pretty darn solid on lead and each had to know 'heel' very well...then it was a relatively easy even though I didn't walk them in a strict 'heel' they had so much practice doing that a crummy heel was what I got and that was perfect for a casual walk.
Each dog was on their own 6 foot leash, usually each with a choke chain. Thule our medium sized dog (relative to the others) was on the inside because she was too confused walking anywhere else. The rest swapped around on walks, but they all walked in a loose 'heel' position on my left. It was only potty stops that got tricky =)
We have 3 doodles, 2 standard & 1 mini. Zeke always walks on the left with the coupler to the outside. He trained on the left and must be left pawed or something because he just doesn't want to walk on the right. Whichever of the other two is misbehaving gets to walk on the inside on the left. This is a toss up between Lily & Jasper. Each of them is fine walking on the right but sometimes we have to make a change during the course of a walk. When it's going well, which is about 80% of the time, it's so satisfying. When it's not going so well it's a pain ( in the arms, shoulders & most of all the butt).
