Well I finally took Jack to the vet today, It was not our normal vet but we have seen her before, Jack's penis (sorry if TMI) and entire abdomen are visible inflamed. His little pee pee looks like a golf ball...THat just happen today.

The vet feels like it is an allergy of some type that is causing him to lick... He doesn't lick his paws, the spot it effects him is his belly and groin. He also had a slightly elevated urine PH again 7.5 7 is normal, He didn't have any crystals in his urine, She offered antibiotics, I declined because she was on the fence about it especially after seeing the swelling.

Jack had a shower and was groomed today by me with puppy shampoo. I am now giving him hydroxyzine q 8 hours as needed. I just gave him some and he is out cold taking a nap with my mom. The only thing that has changed is the flavor Orijen I have fed him. We think it is beef that he is allergic too.

The last time he had itchiness was when he was on beef so I am taking him off it all together, though he loves it.

Back to fish Orijen for now. I hope that this helps, If his groin area does not improve we will do antibiotics for the urine.

I was flabbergasted at how expensive it was today. Things my regular vet does complementary, I got charge an arm and a leg for, including cutting nails. His urine test that used to be 15 I was charge 45 for. When I asked about it the receptionist told me my regular vet has always given me a huge discount and I just didn't know it.

I finally worked the courage up to give Jack the Lepto shot and this vet wouldn't give it!!! She said not safe for small dogs but if I insisted she would give it, but she did add more and more little dogs are coming down with it. Rubber room please......

I also got put in my place when I told them what I learned from the green paw website about K9 advantix and this vet said it is not toxic to dogs, and "dogs do not have receptors for this type of medication, only the bugs do.. I almost believed her until she said "we would never sell anything but the best for the dogs" as I looked around and saw piles of bags of Science Diet and Purina crap.

So Beef, It's not what is for dinner for Jack anymore!!! Hopefully his kidneys are not acting up with his PH again.

Update, Jack ended up going back to the vet today, I was not able to be home today but my mom was with him. She called me a few times and told me he was not himself, he would not eat or drink anything and she couldn't entice him to play at all, She said he was licking more now then ever.

I called my vet and she took him right in, Thank God it was my regular vet and not the other women, not only did she love on Jack, and take good care of him, she didn't charge us anything for the visit...

She said to keep him off beef but his stomach is burned with something and to put Aloe Vera on his belly, She said the pills the other vet gave are to strong and should not be given every eight hours at the most every 12.  I am beyond frustrated that I can not get two people with the same degree to say the same thing.

She also said I should stop reading and listening to anything anyone says on the internet!!! LOL...

Now that I am home, Jack perked up, ate his food, drank water, The aloe vera seems to have helped and he is not sitting on my lap watching me type.

I was told it could take weeks to get the allergy out of his system, I don't think it is an allergy, I think he got bite by something on his belly or his groin when laying outside in the yard but I don't know for sure, I also removed his cedar bed, that is on the newer side too.

Only the good Lord knows what happen, hopefully we are on the mend

Poor Jack, I hope he's better soon.

Thank Goodness Jennifer I just dropped in to check on his progress today. Glad he is eating. Sorry bout his poor little belly and glad the Aloe vera helped.
Thank you Lisa, that was so kind of you to check on us. We love our doodle family!!
I am hoping Jack's belly clears up faster than you think it could. I'm so happy you got a chance to talk to your regular vet who loves Jack and is kind to you regarding the expenses! Poor little guy. Kona got poison oak on his belly again yesterday. My DH is in big trouble for taking them where the poison oak grows again! ugh. He was licking and licking his belly.
Oh no I hope Kona feels better fast, That does not sound like fun at all.

Hi Jen...

Did you ask the Vet about the possiblilty of Jack being bitten by fire ants?

I talked to you about that on the phone the other day...and thought that could have been a possibility with how they are so common in the South.

He could have just layed down on them outside and they really do crawl over you so fast and bite quickly!

You know how much they sting and then leave the site where they bit red and it Really Hurts for a while.

Funny thing is...they don't leave little bumps...but the site is red and puffy and hurts!!

It''s really strange...and I never saw or Felt Anything like it until I got stung by them myself.

So funny...what the doctor said about not listening  to people on the internet!!  Lol...

I do understand what  she means though...(smile)

I'll check in with you later...

Thanks Susan, Sorry I didn't call you, I know you were out last night.. I did not bring Jack to the vet my mom did. The vet said it is a food allergy. I don' t know if I agree. He was for sure burned with something and the ant bite theory works for me.

THe aloe vera seems to soothe him nicely. I took him off the antihistamine and we are watching him.

Love you, talk to you soon.

From what I know or have read (from the nasty ol' internet BTW) it sounds more like a bite or reaction to something external. I am having a hard time thinking Bella is reacting to Chicken. Really? She is outside eating my Rosebush as I write this. That on top of the baby's dolphin cap this afternoon and I am missing another washcloth, so do you think I should worry about good quality chicken kibble?

I sure hope Jack feels better soon, as I know how hard it is to watch them scratch and lick and not be able to help them.

Keep us posted.

Cedar is a known but infrequent allergen or irritant in certain animals including dogs. I think the bedding may be the culprit.
Hi Jared, it's Jennifer's Jack who has the problem; my Jack is okay, knock on wood. But we both thank you for your comment and your concerns.

F

I removed the cedar bedding that day and slowly but surely he is getting better, I don't buy the food allergy totally because he has been licking and licking for a few weeks, about five weeks, about the same time he got the cedar bed from Costco. He loves it because it has firm sides that he rests his head on.

i think you may be right..His licking has stopped.
