Poor Billy has another hot spot. We are shaving the area and cleaning it with a sterile solution and applying a 1% Cortozone creme to the area . It seems to be painful, but Billy is so good he is letting us treat the area.
Does anyone have any other advice or experience with hot spots? We are fairly certain that he gets them because he swims several times a day and never really dries thoroughly even though we towel dry him every time he is out of the pool. This is his third hot spot and other then a antibiotic injection the vet has not treated it differently.

Thank you all for your advice. Poor Billy was really in pain and anytime I went near the spot he would jump. I decided to just take him to our vet and pay the price to make him feel comfortable.
Actually was kind of funny, Billy has this thing about his rear and when the vet tech tried to take his tempature he sat down and there was no moving him....no temp was taken! When the Vet came in, even tho he knows Billy is so gentle, he put a muzzel on him and it took the three of us holding him to shave the hot spot.
A few treats and $150.00 later all is fine and Billy is home resting. He is now 70lbs and from swimming several times a day he is as solid as a rock! When he decides that it will be his way, there is no discussing anything else unless you have a treat in hand. I tried to shave him and even with my 250lbs on top of him he snuck out from under me....He is so strong, I hope he never gets mad at me!
I know you have already taken him to the vet so this is for anyone else who might look this up:
Catch the spot early - Shave the spot - apply the Rx: Neo-Predef w/ Tetracaine powder.
Oral antibiotics may be needed if it is bad. Hardest part is to keep the dog from licking it
which is the catalyst for it getting bigger.
The key is to catch it early and not play around with those useless remedies from pet stores.
Lee - was it on his neck again? Hope he is feeling better!
I was watching an old episode of Animal Cops Philadelphia yesterday. They had a cat that scratched open the entire neck area. After treatment, it healed so well. Only 1 little spot still not 100% closed. A friend of theirs knitted a wide cotton collar that they slipped over her head to keep her from scratching her skin. Thought it was a brilliant idea for a neck wound. For our doodles, I am sure it would need velcro to close it.
