Second poop is runny....Aahhh the joys of owning a dog!

As some of you may know from other posts I switched foods quite a bit (too much) until we settled on Blue Buffalo. We now have had our five-month-old goldendoodle, Addie, on Blue Buffalo for three weeks or so. One thing we notice is that her first poop is always perfect, solid and easy to pick up. Subsequent poops are runny (often after exercise). Is this normal, and does it have to do with the food? Thanks so much, this community is wonderful.

I am no expert, but is your dog drinking a lot more water during the day and could that have anything to do with the runnier poops?

I would say she is drinking more now that it is hot. She is black and heats up quickly!

David, I hope someone smarter than me helps you here. I just notice that our Vern drinks buckets of water in the summer and his poop tends to be looser. I will be following this to see what other people say. Good luck. There is a Poop Group here on DK too.

Maddie (17 months) is exactly the same way.  First one usually done in our yard is firm and fully formed and then the one done on our walk or playing a bit later is much looser and smaller in volume.  Not easy to pick up - kind of smears - so I usually end up pulling the tops off the grass to get it all.

I think the looser poop is just from jthe excitement of going for a walk or playing ball etc, so I've never been concerned because it's just the way it has always been with her.

I think as long as Addie is her happy doodle self and her poop isn't a weird colour, bloody or slimy, I wouldn't worry about it.

This was the way the Rooney was on Orijen and sometimes even the first poop wasn't very firm.  Then I started giving him a small amount of raw (Primal brand) with each meal - just a one ounce nugget and it has firmed his poop right up.  Stuart also gets the same small amount and it has also helped his poo too.

Not sure either but just wanted to say that this happens to us too. The first one is pretty ok-later in the day off course on a neighbors lawn it's hard to pick up. I would give the food a chance and maybe try some of the ideas given to you but I wouldn't worry. We just switched the food this weekend and are having the same issues-we are still mixing old and new though so it will take time also went from grain to grain free so they say this may take longer.

Hi David . . ..  ahhh the poop question!!!  My two doodles poop completely different Oliver has alsways been different and he has always had loose poops.  His poop is solid when it first comes out then at the end most of the time it is VERY loose.  I was obsessed with this but have learned to accept it, why because my Sasha has the most perfect poop.  Her's is compact, hard but not too hard and very easy to pick up in the yard.  Oliver who is 75+ lbs and still growing never had a perfect poop.  I have changed foods about 3 times and did some reasearh  and I have accepted that this is the way "he" is which has nothing to do with the food.  I do give him a tablespoon of pain greek yogart a few times a week and also give him probiotics when I see his poops getting too loose.  The probiotics work the best, Purina has individual packetts which is called Forti-Floram it works immediately.  I get it on line and always have it on had for both dogs, you can give it to them daily or when you see a loose or runny poop.  Good Luck

we have the same problem with Lola. She had GREAT poops for years until wee recently (a few months ago) made the change from a "vet formula" food to Orijen. It's quite frustrating!

Here's my take on this, the first poop of the day has been in the bowel longer where more water has been absorbed, making it more firm, the second poop of the day has had less time for the water to be absorbed. Quincy's poops are this way as well, no matter what food he is on his poops while formed, are soft.
