We have a harness for Jake when he goes walking, soon as we take it out he gets all excited .If we get a life jacket for him he might feel safer and get excited it might help. The more we work with him the better he'll get I hope.
I bet the confidence would be there if you had a life jacket, did you try going in the water with him and having DH throw his favorite toy to you?

The woman at our doggie daycare said to play with a toy for just a few minutes... then take it away. Play a little more... and then take it away.  Make him REALLY want it.  She told us to even deprive him for an our before we bring him to daycare so when he gets to daycare he's ready for the toy.  Then throw the ball into the water-- not to far but enough that he'll realize the water is fine.  And each time you throw it throw it out a little further until he's swimming.

She also said if you've brought them in physically yourself, hold onto their harness but if they are paniced don't let them out until you'v noticed they've calmed down and realized you are there and that they are fine.  She said the last thing you want the dood to remember is a calm feel, not panic.

thank you ,Jake really likes new toys! We will give this a try I think it might work will let you know.
Cooper was very unsure of water her first summer (she was born at the end of April so was still very young). Her second summer she would only paddle (though she would very happily do that)- til we were playing fetch on the beach and after several throws I threw the stick into the water and in she plunged. There was a brief panic moment of "Mommy what am I doing?' then a "cool, im swimming" look. Now she loves it!
Jake is 8 months old he's a big doode for his age.My husband picks him up sometimes to  get him in the car or out of the car He says if I have to pick him up to get him in the water it has to be this summer ,next summer he'll be picking me up lol. Cooper is adorable.
How old is he?
Murphy was born in May and the first summer hated the water. I would literally carry him out with his paws wrapped around my neck, let him go to swim back to shore. I had to hold his tail up to keep his rear end from sinking.

The following summer he loved the water
Murphy is very handsome,Jake is 8 months ,our lake frontage is about 3 feet deep we don't have a shore that goes in gradually thats why we built him his own private dock that goes in on a slant, hoping he wouldn't be quite so scared..We will keep working with him thanks for your help,I LOVE THIS SITE.
Sharon, where we dock on the river it had no shore area too.  My DH hauled in road stone and built a small area.
That might work if I can get my DH to haul in rocks,I'm sure he will if its for Jake.lol
Frightened doodle
OH HE DOES LOOK SCARED,POOR BABY LOL
