We enjoy our small vegetable garden and try new things each year.  A few years ago we tried garlic without success.  So sad.  So last year we researched more on growing garlic and came across an article ( I can't find it any longer ) where certain cultures have a ritual for planting garlic.

There are garlic planting festivals on the day of the Fall Equinox where everyone parties and plants garlic.  Many found it not only brings them Good Luck but good luck for the crops also!

So last year on the day of the Fall Equinox we planted our garlic.  A bit superstitious but as garlic lovers we were determined to grow garlic.

Ten months, plus a few days, yesterday was our Garlic Harvest.

Wow, and who's the dishy gardener : ) Surely that can't be his own hat. I have some doubts about the rituals but I guess the fall equinox must be about the right time to plant garlic. It looks great.

Congratulations on your lovely and fragrant harvest! F.J. looks so proud!

Keep the dogs away from it, though!

Oh yes!  And thanks for the reminder.  I do have trouble keeping Starlit out of the green beans and peas but the garlic may be a bit STRONG --whew--for her.
I just saw this, RJ....this is awesome!  We love fresh garlic and take a road trip to a garlic farm a few towns away all through the garlic season.  I've never tried to grow it myself.  Do you cook the scapes too?  I think they're the best part.

Jane how do you use the scapes ? I just made stir fry with them and could only find recipes for pesto . Thought they would be good in salsa too

Here's a link the the website for the garlic farm we go to.  There are some ideas for how to use the scapes and some growing tips.  I basically use them like I use green onions, only to me they taste much better.  I sprinkle them on everything....salads, potatoes, meats....mix them with butter.   http://www.garlicfarmct.com/recipes.htm
Oh yea, I forgot....nice hat FJ.  LOL

Jane,

We just found out about Scapes!   We noticed the tops of the stalk had funny balls on them.  We searched the internet and found out they were  Scapes and many thought the best part of the garlic.

Oh yes, we ate them a few weeks ago.  If you cut them off, the bulbs become larger.  We may have been a little late in cutting. Our bulbs were medium.

Jane, my attached garage reeks of garlic.  Many days we leave the door open and use that as a little sitting area.   I'm afraid, without knowing it, that I reek of garlic too.  Makes me wonder if my entire house smells.  Oh well.

We were taking drives to get get garlic too.  That is when we decided to try to grow some.

A few years ago, we drove for hours in the country looking for garlic for sale.   We found it, however it must have cost $20.00 in gas, plus the $5.00 for a few small bulbs.  We joked about that for a long time.

It must be that cutting these scapes, new word for me, keeps the garlic from flowering and going to seed. When things go to seed they use nutrients/energy from the plant.
Should have asked you a few weeks ago.  That is exactly what the article read.
Glad my noggin is working. I dead head my flowers as much as I can for the same reason. But also, for many plants they keep blooming to try to set seed. I would have thought though that the scapes themselves were necessary to keep the bulb growing, photosynthesis and all that.

They sprout out separately so you still have the stalk for photosynthesis.   One site called it a FALSE seed stalk.

Cultivation: All hardneck and some softneck plants will produce a false seedstalk topped by an umbel containing numerous small bulbils. Although opinions differ about seedstalk removal, it is generally believed that bulb yields are higher from plants that have had seedstalks removed than from those left intact. Stalks should not be removed too soon, it is best to wait until the seedhead begins to coil before cutting it off etc....... http://www.garlicworld.co.uk/garden/page2.html
