Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

My husband and I have been toying with the idea of adding more doolemania to our lives ever since Rosy was about a year old (she's now 2 1/2).  One of the (mental) sticking points we have is that we want another female but have heard that it's difficult for 2 dogs of the same breed and sex to co-exist peacefully.  Maybe this is an old wife's tale- I don't know, so thought it would be best to take it to the experts in our DoodleKisses community.  Please share your experiences (the good, the bad, the ugly) if you have 2 Doods of the same sex living together in your home.  Thanks in advance everyone!

Thanks Kim- you made me laugh out loud :)
Thanks Laurie for your insights- most "professionals" I've asked do recommend a mix of sexes.  I've always had male dogs and enjoyed them, Rosy is my first female and she's wonderful.  Both males were un-neutered (one was a pup from first in class winners, the other was the dog I grew up with back a million years ago when neutering wasn't practiced as matter of fact) so I imagine it might a little different experience with a neutered male (marking territory, etc).
Jacqui, that is so exciting you are thinking of getting another dog!  I'm not sure if you are using the same breeder as Rosy, but let me know if you want Harper's breeder's information.  Harper is now fully grown and is such a delight.  I couldnt' recommend the breeder more highly!

Thank you Kathy, I think we probably would go back to Cherry Valley Labradoodles since we've had such a great experience with Rosy.  Time really flies,I can't believe Harper is a full grown girlie already- she is really beautiful.  I'm glad to hear your enjoying her so much- this is such a fantastic breed!  Hope to see you guys rompin around somewhere soon :)

I now have 3 females dogs under the same roof,-
14 y/o desexed Dalmation.
6 y/o desexed Maltese.
18 week Groodle.
So far no hassles, just normal age related challenges,
( no older dog would like a puppy jumping on her as she squats to go to the toilet )
I have two females 2 years apart and have had as many as 4 females at once of the same breed (German shorthaired pointers) and they all got along well. As you can tell from their photo, they can eat ice cream out of the same little cup with anyone growling. They are like two peas in a pod. Good luck with your 2nd doodle.
Oh no...they are just the cutest sharing that ice cream!  Your girls look so much alike- they're beautiful.

We have an 11 year old female lab and a 2 year old male labradoodle.  Two weeks ago we added Molly, a 14 week old labradoodle to our family.  We have had no issues - other than minor puppy annoying elderly lab.  They each have their own bowls and beds, but are not aggressive about it.  Tanner (our male doodle) believes we brought Molly home as his personal toy.  They run and wrestle and play all the time, and he's pretty gentle for a 75 pound guy!  Our two females have had no issues at all.  We previously had 2 female labs in the house, and never had any issues at all.  Go for it and enjoy!

As others have said, it probably has more to do with the personality than the sex. We have two girls from the same stud roughly 9 months apart in age. They are opposite as night and day. We thought we were going to get a "clone" of our first girl. Instead we got one more than twice as large as the first, 10 times as rowdy, very jealous but the most loving, obedient dog we have ever had. Both our girls are people dogs. They each would rather be with us than each other. It's not the loving sister relationship we had anticipated. But they are both wonderful dogs.

Steve this is very interesting- are your girls "civil" to each other?  Do you have to seperate and confine them when you aren't home?

yes! we have two brothers we got them when they were 6 weeks old. We have the first born of the litter and he is always looking out for his brother. they get along wonderfully! we are glad we got two. even if they weigh 75 pounds each they are a joy! no problem with one more dominant than the other. they go everywhere with us. i would recommend two instead of one.
