Our trainer (the school is affiliated with St Hubert's shelter here in NJ) told us yesterday that there are 2 holidays where the shelter rate increases is Halloween and 4th of July. Her suggestion was to keep our pups home and not to have them at the door to greet the Trick or Treaters as they could bolt out the door at a scary costume (and who is to say what our Doodle would find scary).
I should also include other safety tips from"Discovering Labradoodles":
-candles
-chocolate
- the artificial sweetener xylitol (Other sugar sweeteners such as sorbitol, mannitol, saccharin, aspartame, and sucralose are generally regarded as safe for dogs)
we are taking murphy out with us too wonder how he will do:) my mom went out and bought him some treats for when we stop their....she is just as excited to see him dressed up as much as the kids......
GREAT advice!! I am going to keep our dogs gated in the laundry room, but have plans to buy them their favorite bones........which will be a treat for them because they usually are not allwed to eat them inside. Hope this works. This will be Giada's first Halloween experience, and she is so nervous about new situations in the first place. We shall see:)
Add raisins to that list of common ingredients that are deadly to dogs. And for those of you with cats, black cats are a hot Halloween commodity for those who are up to no good, so keep an eye on them, too. Most shelters refuse to adopt out black cats during this time period, because of what has been done to them.
Thanks, Adrianne, for reminding us to be extra careful with our doodles this Halloween!
