Tonight while I was enjoying a glass of wine on the patio I watched in horror as a car took a left turn and and sent a guy on his bike flying through the air. He bounced on the ground. He was concious but he clearly hit his head and broke his arm. It was horrifying to watch, but I was impressed with how quickly and efficiently everyone responded. He is lucky it wasn't worse. I'm still feeling a little traumatized by it all. I can't imagine how the guy driving the car must have felt.
This exact same scenario almost happened to me once about 10 years ago, but the car missed me. Unfortunately I had hit my brakes hard in panick and went flying off my bike, if it weren't for the fact that my foot got caught I would have gone head first into the ground. The doctor chided my for not wearing a helmet, saying that one of his patience had recently died from a similar accident and a helmet would have saved him.
So I just wanted to say for all you bike riders out there - please wear your helmets when you ride your bike. It could save your life.

WE argue with ourselves constantly about being fine, can't happen, we ride slow, I would never hit my head but WE should heed your warning.
We is not us, we wear our helmets or we don't ride. WE is "most" riders we pass on the trails. My former boss took a ride over his handle bars in a bike trail crash....he was badly injured but his head was covered by a helmet and lived to torture me at work 2 weeks later. :o)
In 2007 my DH was in a near fatal motorcycle accident. Had he hit the truck less than a centimeter either direction. It would have been FATAL. He was not wearing a helmet and all his injuries were to the head. DH was air lifted to the hospita, became unresponsive during transport and spend the next 6 days in a induced coma state. By the grace of god he walked out of the hospital 9 days later.
Even though the accident wasn't his fault it still happened. No matter how careful you are YOU STILL NEED TO WEAR A HELMET.
Thanks, Laurie. Getting a call from a Texas State Trooper at 2am and being in Iowa didn't help.
Thanks, Leslie. In the last 5 years we have lost 1 to 3 friends a year from motorcycle accidents. This spring was the worst when our friends 25 year old son was killed. Chris was Lexi's age when I first met him.
