Jane - For years, we would lose power several times a year and because we live out in the country we'd be low on the priority list for the power company to address our outage.  So my husband bought a generator.  About that same time, we bought an RV - partly to travel and partly as a "backup" house in the event of a major disaster - we live in earthquake country.  Anyhow, after getting the generator and RV, we've not had a power outage that lasted longer than an hour.  I'm thrilled, but my husband is disappointed!

I put in a backup generator that powers all the important things in my house. Then I too had many fewer power outages but I'm fine with that.

Jane, I completely sympathize with you.  Sunday, beautiful but hot day - no storms - no wind and the power went out.  DH was in the yard running the weadeater with sweat pouring off him.  I went out and told him not to look forward to a shower when he finished because the power was off (we have a well - no electricity=no water).  He finished with the weedeater and we got in his pickup with the A/C running full blast and went to town (20 miles away) and had lunch in A/C.  Came home and got the generator out of the garage and fired it up. DH got his shower.  Still didn't have A/C but turned ceiling fans on and he watched a movie on TV and I checked in on DK and other things.  After 4 hours the power came back on and the A/C too.  A couple of our neighbors have whole house generators that come on automatically when the power goes off.
