Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I've got two labradoodles.  Both F1's.

Rosco's weight is in the mid high-80's.  When I trimmed his nails today I thought "HOW do I allow these talons to grow like this?  What kind of dog owner am I?"

Boca's weight is in the low 50's and when I attempted to trim her nails I kept wondering "Why do these nails look trimmed already?  Is she sneaking off and getting pedicures and leaving me behind?"

So WHICH of these dogs do you think destroys the lawn the most?  Is it mammoth talon bearing Rosco or dainty little Boca?

Well, BOCA, of course!  I don't know HOW she does it but as she runs after balls and makes fast turns she manages to toss behind her the BIGGEST divots!  It's incredible.  It's like like she's playing golf with her paws made of cleats. Baffles me.

Anyone else's dood a major divot maker without any trying?

This is too funny.  It really hits home.  I used to golf--a lot. My x father-in-law was a teaching pro in New York.  I had way too many lessons.  The only one I remember, " Fix Your Divots"   Love the game, gave it up, but I did learn how to fix a good divot!!!

So now, almost daily, I've been on a " Save The Grass" mission.   I go through the yard, talk to myself out loud, in a smart mouth tone, " Fix Your Divots. Fix your divots".  It is very obsessive.  Ask my DH..

It does help the grass.  Kind of.  Spud can really tear up a yard.

Nails--I have only cut nails on Spud ONCE this year.  No need.  But lazy Starlit, well she needs her nails done twice a month.

At least now, as I talk to myself in the yard, I'll think of you all too.   I thought I was the only one.

I think I would be happy to have the divots - Cloud is our digger and I'm pretty sure he is digging for gold (it is $1800/an ounce after all) to have extra money for treats.  It's hard not to laugh when I watch him with the dirt flying out every which way but fixing the holes has become a weekly job and the ferns are trampled.
No thank goodness-my DH is all weepy that they make dead spots where they potty, we pour water on it everytime now in hopes to satisfy him. I look kinda silly watering with the a watering can right after they go!
Sounds like a great way to aerate the lawn!   lol !

Oh yes and the digging.  No new holes I've seen lately, but for a while, every now and then after just MINUTES unsupervised, I'd find a freshly dug hole.  Sometimes it was dug merely with her nose while rolling a rubber ball in it for fun.  Sometimes out of nowhere she'd get the urge to dig for 30 seconds and get a tremendous job done.

We've patched up a few areas nicely.  A few nights ago I dreamed that I opened the door to the backyard and there was NO lawn except on the borders and what USED to be lawn was now just moon craters.

Have you tried the digusting-but-effective poop-in-the-hole trick? When I first got Sadie she was a huge digger, so I tried (having read about it online) burying one of her poops in the areas where she dug. I'd also heard that this would just encourage her to dig elsewhere, but it didn't--she really has no interest in digging in the yard any more. She does dig a lot at the dog park, so I'm hoping that somehow she's figured out that dog park = OK to dig / yard = no digging.

Now if I could just get her to stop grabbing rocks from my neighbor's garden...

Oh yeah we've had MANY poop filled holes.  It keeps Boca from the poop filled hole but doesn't stop her from acting on the impulse to dig somewhere else randomly at some point.
