Well, Hattie has been damp down there for a long time now, maybe as long as I have had her. I talked to the vet once about it about two months ago when she peed in her sleep twice and was damp a lot then. So today I called again and took her a pee sample because I noticed she was wet again. The vet said there were white cells indicative of of low grade infection and gave her a 14 day round of antibiotics. The vet said we start here and if this doesn't clear it up we would progress on to hormone replacement therapy for two weeks to see if that will work. If that doesn't work then surgery to repair something or other. I tuned out because it was kind of scary. So today's vet bill was just short of my annual insurance premium. Please say a little prayer for Hattie that this is just a UTI. She also said she has an "outie" meaning she has a little crease in her vulva instead of it being smooth so it lends itself to infection easier.

Oh boy, poor Hattie.  I do remember you posting earlier that she had peed in her sleep which I thought at the time a little strange.  I do hope this is a simple UTI which I think are more common in girls.  I'm not clear as to where HRT comes into it?  I'll be thinking of you both and saying a little prayer here for Hattie. X Nicky and Riley
Sandy, I will definitely pray for Hattie. You must be so concerned. I am glad your vet is staying on top of things. Hoping for the very best results from the tests.
Oh poor Hattie.  Here's hoping it's just a UTI and she'll be fine once the antibiotics take hold.
Hope she feels better soon! Lily also has an "outie" (inverted vulva), and the vet recommended waiting to spay her until after her first heat. He said that it may self correct with the hormones associated with the heat. If we spay her before her heat, and she still has an inverted vulva, she may be prone to a life of vaginitis and UTI's (although we haven't had any yet). What did your vet recommend as far as spaying?
The surgery your vet was talking about was probably to repair the inverted vulva. My vet said if Lily's didn't self correct after her first heat, that during her spay he could do a little procedure to tuck that fold of skin that surrounds it, so that she wasn't prone to infection. I'm thinking the hormone replacement therapy you talked about must be to mimic what it would be like if she went into heat. I guess the hormones associated with the  heat cycle cause the vulva to swell up and it usually pops itself out of that fold.
Hopefully it is just a UTI and if she does need surgery, maybe just fixing the fold will help. I read that the inverted vulva pushes up on the bladder, causing a lof of these problems. Sending prayers that it is all a simple fix, and Hattie feels well soon!!
There is no tube going from the kidney to the urethra un less she has a serious birth defect, which I think is unlikely. The ureters go to the bladder. Then the urethra leads from the bladder outside. Bladder infections are very common in puppies, especially females because of their anatomy. I would definitely avoid surgery and not have it done unless a specialist was consulted. I also would not put her on lifelong HRT without a second opinion at least.
Yes it is. I hope the vet got a culture and sensitivity to be sure of giving the right antibiotic.
Hattie, hope your antibiotics fix the problem and you don't have anymore issues.
I just trimmed Coopers "uh -ooh" fur and noticed she had an outie too (never noticed before) then read this discussion lol. Cooper was an early spay too, at about 8 weeks. She has never had an infection *touch wood* Hope Hattie feels better soon
Poor Hattie, hope that is is just a minor issue...
Sandy, prayers going up for sweet little Hattie and for you!
