travel by car- crate or harness?

Hi everyone,

Lilly is 13 wks today. I have to quit holding her on rides ( we only have one car here in Nebraska, so there is always someone to hold Lilly.) As much as I love holding my little (7 lbs today) furbaby, I know it is not safe.

We will be traveling by car ALOT spending time in nebraska, florida and arizonia. visiting family in california, boston, dc..

I would like to know what everyone uses and recommends or has used and says don't bother. I am thinking that the harness would be safer in (God forbid) an accident but a soft crate would be good for hotel stays...thank you in advance.

I use a car seat in front seat.  But Sheila is a mini @ 10 lbs. full grown.  On full car trips we let her out of her seat and she sleeps on a seat sometimes, likes car seat best tho bc she can see out.  No car sickness and I think part of that is that she has always been able to see out since a puppy, so she knows the feel of car, brakes and has it all asso in brain. I always let my big labs sit in passenger seat, too.  I've never had a car sick dog.  But I GET CAR SICK.  No justice.

A harness in the car seat with a soft crate, if needed, in the hotel.  In my experience with pet friendly motels, they don't want the dog left alone in the room unless it is crated to protect the cleaning staff.  I didn't leave mine alone in the room, I thought that would be pretty scary to be left alone in a strange place after traveling to a strange place!  A metal crate in a car takes up quite a bit of room and has to be secured so it won't fly through the car.

We just bought a harness with a zipline so he can move around the back but still be restrained if something happens.  They sent us the wrong size but it's a start!

We use the Zoom II car seat plus harness.  The car seat lifts her up so she can see (she's a medium) and the harness keeps her safe.  This isn't the greatest picture, but it gives you an idea:

We need new car harnesses but we can't decide which tyoe to go with. If I had a choice I would do the harness and the car seat. Good luck
