I got my goldendoodle as a rehome...can anyone help me figure out if he might be F1 or F1b?!

Hi everyone!

 

I'm pretty new here but I have a 7 month old black goldendoodle named Tanner. I got him as a rehome when he was 11 weeks old from a girl who got him and couldn't afford to keep him (she had him only a week). 

Anyway, I know he came from someone in Virginia but she doesn't have a website so I have no idea what his parents looked like, I only know that the mother was a golden retriever. The reason I don't know what he is, is because he's SUPER curly (think like a standard poodle's coat) but he has the golden retriever tail and the "boxy" head. I was thinking he'd be F1b because he's black but I'm not entirely sure. Does anyone else have a dog like this? What was your dog mixed with? Any comments/opinions would be great!

Leslie, there is really no way of knowing unless you could ask his breeder or if the girl who had him a week knew anything at all.  What information did the girl who had him one week give you? Surely this person knows where she got him and how etc. Might he be stolen? Was he previously chipped - if so you might be able to get records that way.

The girl who had him a week got him directly from the breeder and I got the only paperwork he had which was a copy of his mother's certification and a piece of paper to mail in and get his papers. I have the breeders name but I get the feeling that she may be a hobby breeder based on the fact that she doesn't have a website and she's only listed on one dog breeding website. However, I could be wrong but I guess I'll have to call! I definitely need to get him chipped, he likes escaping the yard!

I would call the breeder and ask about him if you got paperwork.  He might already be chipped.  Many breeders do this as part of their fee.

An F1b can also be an F1 bred back to a golden.

I doubt he'd have such curly hair in that case, though.

I think it could be either an F1b or an F1 -- he's adorable though whatever he is!

If the mother was a Golden Retriever, he's an F1. The color has nothing to do with the generation.

As Lisa said above, an F1B would have a goldendoodle for one parent and a purebred poodle for the other.

There are a lot of people with very curly hair who have one parent with straight hair and one parent with curly hair. Genetics are like that.

To me these pictures of Tanner looks a lot like my sister's f1 goldendoodle, Charlie.  Her name is Amanda Rodriguez and she is here on DK; you can see pics of Charlie on her page.  I couldn't tell how curly Tanner is from your pictures, your description makes him sound more like my Webster.  Webster is an f2 (still 50/50) with a golden retriever body and poodle hair.  Here is a picture of Webster when he was about 10 months old.  My other goldendoodle is also 50/50 (not sure if she's considered f2 or multigen) and she has a very curly coat.
